In a person’s life, there could be two major problems in the spirit. First, he does not obey God. Second, he mistakenly thought that he is actually obeying God. Firstly, we must understand that man is created to receive absolute rest (peace and joy) in obeying God. The only sin of the Israelites is their disobedience. Because they lost the spirit to obey, they turned to idols, relied on foreigners, grumbled against God and behaved unrighteously. On the same note, the servants of God (e.g., Abraham, Moses, David) were not noble, nor did they have great faith, or could sacrifice everything for God.  They possessed the spirit of obedience, thus they could see God’s guidance and renewal in each step. Their actions gradually became fitting of one who was called by God’s grace. Actually, their lives did not begin with offering anything for God, but seeing the Lord as the greatest, and humbly accepting the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all things. Their lifetime preoccupation was not centred on giving up anything, but because they knew and believed in the Lord who has fulfilled all things, they strived to deny self in all things. Actually, the glory, power, authority, wisdom of God has never diminished, but often our own motives, thoughts, ideas become factors that ‘oppose the work of God’. In the Bible, we can clearly see that whenever man’s thinking and methods appear, he immediately cannot see God’s work. Instead, he enters into rights and wrongs, and all kinds of worries and frustrations. So, what does it mean to obey God? Many believers have a big misunderstanding in this area, and mistakenly think that outward piety, sacrifices and zeal is obedience. Man easily focuses on what he is giving up for God, but not on what the Lord wants him to give up (self denial). Actually, since the fall of Adam, men either disobey God or obey God in their own terms (difference between Cain and Abel). The descendents of Adam are all stuck in the nature of disobedience. If believers do not understand the mystery within, they would also fall into the state of ‘having a form of godliness but denying its power’. Thus Christ is revealed to demonstrate the life that is totally obedient, so that those who believe in Him can receive such a life.
