If gospel is not a rigid theory but a life that is active and progressive, people who know the gospel need to anticipate the new conviction that Holy Spirit gives continuously, and the new boundaries He’s leading us to. Before Lord Jesus ascended to Heaven, not only had He revealed the full content of gospel, He also promised them the spirit that works behind this gospel (the Holy Spirit that gives life and power). Hence, without the work of this Holy Spirit, we human will always be bound in our own narrow perspective, background, culture, methods, boundaries etc. Without the functioning and work brought by the Holy Spirit, gospel being preached from Jerusalem to the ends of the world will quickly reduce to a slogan or movement, it will not multiply tremendously and achieve what we see today. Why so? For we human have too much disbeliefs and limitations within us.What we see in the disciples reflect the state of our lives too. Once Lord was out of sight, His word was forgotten too; withdrew easily when persecuted; easily contented when received revival; once living in a culture, we are unwilling to come into contact or influence other cultures; easily proud when we have some knowledge; once firming the power above, become unwilling to understand the difficulties of the ones beneath etc. Actually, little do we realize all these spiritual problems are resisting the gospel. These are the self-glorifying and self-contented tendencies in us. Therefore, in Acts, God gave Holy Spirit to those who believe so that Holy Spirit worked in their hearts, causing them to continue to abandon their selves and complete Lord’s mission, and experienced the unlimited grace of the Holy Spirit in the process. This work from the Holy Spirit is actually steadfast and consistent, but men became aware of it especially on 2 occasions: First, when they faced trials, the saints quickly returned to Lord’s promise and understood that the Great Commission that Lord formerly promised and instructed them had not changed (this is a compelled grace, just like after Stephen was martyred and the church was greatly persecuted, the disciples scattered and preached the gospel); Second, in the process of mutual edification of the saints (gather, intercede, scatter to preach the gospel, and then gather again, and develop the relationships), Holy Spirit gave new revelation and new convictions in these relationships, bringing Lord’s gospel to new territory (just like how Peter met Cornelius, his relatives, and close friends; Paul’s encounter with Damascus believers; Barnabas searching for Paul and coworkers in Antioch; the evangelical work of Paul and coworkers in various areas, advancing the gospel to Rome). In these new relationships and mutual edification, Holy Spirit continues to give new conviction and call all saints to complement one another to accomplish the new mission. Therefore, there needs to be an emphasis in the relationship of saints. If we have a heavenly relationship, surely there will be the love of kingdom and mission in it. There’s mission in this love, and we all the more love one another in this mission. Such is the relationship Lord has given us. In mutual edification and preaching the gospel, experience the progressive conviction given by the Holy Spirit and continue to build progressive relationships.
