Emotions are part of our soul, but a person without the Truth will discern the emotions wrongly and regard his feeling as everything. Today, many devote much attention to their feelings, as a result, they become more and more fragile. Some do not use their feelings correctly, causing them to unable to glorify God. Besides, some ignore their emotion needs, and do not know how to protect their own feelings. As a result, their hearts are continuously wounded. The outcome of such people is that, he may end up hurting others’ feelings. In addition (especially in this internet era), people try to cover the wounded emotions inside them by filling themselves up with the information, news, or the virtual world. Hence, we observe a phenomenon in social media, i.e., people “strive” to tell others where have they been, what are they playing or eating, how much “likes” they have received. It is not unusual to hear people expressing a lot of constructive ideas, yet lacking of true joy in their hearts, because in reality, they are often attacked by their situations. In particular, for the younger generation, we see that they often give out aspiring speeches or suggestions, but without true substance in their living. Indeed, one of our greatest problems is that of not knowing our own hearts, and thus, we cannot read our hearts. Whenever we talk about “heart”, people assume it is referring to “our feelings”, and they regard their feelings as everything. Actually, feelings are not our hearts. When we mention “hearts”, we easily understand it as inner thoughts, mindsets, motivation, attitude, heartbeat, emotions, heart tactics etc. If we don’t feel good, are we then a hot-tempered person? When unreasonable people provoke us, our anger may turn into compassion after that knowing that the person is helpless too. Hence, we cannot use our feelings or transient emotions to determine all things. Behind this, there are issues with our thoughts (not renewed) or heart motivation (not changed). A very depraved generation is generation that does not know their own hearts, and the people living in this era are often deceived by their deceitful hearts. The psalmist often asked, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?” In asking, he led his heart to “look upon God” until he can see in his spirit that “God is helping him with smiling face”, until he can praise the Lord in his emotions. The psalmist brought the lies of his heart to the truth of God’s presence. Try thinking: if we do not question our hearts, or if we do not challenge the untruthful thoughts, we will be led by our emotions naturally. We let our feeling shape us (in another word: we accept everything that we can see and hear from our reality). Indeed, this generation needs (1) to know the truth, and cleanse our hearts with the truth; (2) to know our hearts by relying on the Spirit of Truth, until we are like the psalmist who keeps questioning our own hearts. With this, only then can we use our emotions rightly, and not being seized by the transient emotions that often come upon us, which are incompatible with the Truth.
