When we talk about tribulations, some may ask what is the difference between tribulations encountered by Christians and people of the world? Besides, it is human nature to not want to suffer, thus some churches teach little about the reality and meaning of trial. Apostle Paul said, “we must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” This is absolutely not implying that we are earning eternal life through tribulations. Rather, it is telling us that we truly belong to the kingdom of God, and because we are entering this kingdom in future, today, we will have difficult paths on earth. Paul also said, “everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” Actually, no matter what nature of trial we are experiencing (be it bodily pain, many challenges in living, the trial of the loved ones, or the anxiety in our hearts and mental tiredness etc), there must be 2 characteristics to the trial experienced by blessed people like us. Firstly, we can relate to all tribulations in this sinful world. Due to the presence of evil, the life, aging, sickness, and death of human is a reality. Everyone dies, and there is judgment after death <Heb 9:27>. We Christians have our Lord in hearts, we also co-exist with all these tribulations. Secondly, for we are set apart from the world, the world and the king of the world deem us as enemies. Therefore, there is a type of trial among the many in the world, that is, the trial that seeks to engulf our faith. On the night when the Lord was betrayed, He warned His disciples to be watchful in prayers, so that they will not be blinded. He also told Peter that He had prayed for him, so that his faith will not be lost. Here, we see that the work of devil is not only about inflicting trial to believers, but more importantly, he is trying to engulf the believers’ faith through tribulations. There are 2 types of faith. First, the faith of redemption (if we truly believe, we will not lose this faith); next, it is the trust in Lord during the journey of faith of believers. The devil will never rob away the faith of redemption given us, but what he is always after is to destroy our dependency and trust in the Lord. Often times, we are attacked because of this, thus our trial multiples, just like the lost sheep. Actually, God has never left us. However, the feeling and thoughts of lostness we have will crush us brutally. We thought that we are abandoned, such that we cannot look upon the sovereignty of Lord in deciding all things – that is the reason why our tribulations potentiate. Often, when we quiet down and wait upon the Lord in trial, continuously confirm His promise, the pressure from the evil in our hearts will slowly dissipate. After that, Lord’s help will emerge in our hearts and minds. Actually, we ought to hold onto Lord’s promise. We need to know, if it is not permissible by the Lord, no trial can come upon us; but if Lord does indeed allow tribulations, He will surely give us sufficient strength to go through it. Hence, in facing trial, our ways of handling it is not escapism, neither do us allow ourselves to accept the various negativity, such that our faith is lost. The Lord is with His people, even more so in trial. Therefore, we need to know the value and meaning of trial to Christians, and be more than conquerors by relying the Lord in tribulations.
