我们都生活在一个相对之下相当舒适的环境里。我们的国家是民主社会，有信仰的自由，我们不需因着信仰受到很严重的弊害。我们都活在高科技、舒适、方便的社会里。大致上，我们的需求也都能得到满足。除非我们的人生当中遭遇了一些不堪忍受的苦难, 像是疾病、抑郁、婚姻破裂、儿女误入歧途或是因信仰被家人弃绝的问题，“苦难”对我们这活在安逸社会中的人来说还是处于一种的观念。可能对我们大部分人，那叫我们比较难受的问题一般就是：孩子学习不佳、工作的忙碌、人际关系的摩擦、需要买房买车的压力等。有时我们翻开圣经，读到圣经伟人为福音所遭遇的苦楚和付出的代价，我们不禁会觉得自己的问题微不足道，甚至会感觉自己目前许多思虑愁烦是无谓的。基本上，我们的问题就是“没有问题”。当我们没有问题的时候，我们也不愿意自己会遇到问题，更不需故意去找问题。但在此我们又会面对一个现实，就是我们怎么实实在在的背起十字架来跟从主呢？当圣经告诉我们：“凡要敬虔度日的都会遭受逼迫”，或是“我们当与基督一同受苦，一同得荣耀”，我们心里不禁会问：“那苦究竟在哪里呢？”或“我们若真是面对了那样的苦，我们能胜过吗？”其实有时候，我们因过度体贴自己的难处，因忙碌或无力而少来聚会或是无心与人传福音，我们心里也收着有些控告。确实，我们在神面前当要怀着正直清洁的心，我们不能留着一些的控告或自责在心中，然后去寻找另外一种安抚信仰良心的方法，比如说：我们多读经，多服侍主，多奉献，多参加一些基督徒课程。这些是我们都应当要做的，但我们绝不能逃避我们已经被真理光照的良心，就是我们现在是否过着一个背起十字架的信仰生活。如果今天有人问我们说：“你是一个背十字架的信徒吗？”我们能以无愧的良心回答说“是的”吗？对于这样的问题，我们不能说我们给了十一奉献，也不能说我们周间有去查经班，所以我们是背十字架的信徒。这个问题是问道我们信仰的良心，对准我们生命的中心点与生活中的优先程序。这个问题是关乎我们的思想（以圣经的教导为中心思想），我们的情感（继续爱主、渴慕主），意志（继续要寻求主，遵照祂的旨意而行）,然后我们因此也很清楚主给我们的十字架，也实际将它背起，所以那不是以某个信仰举动来断定的。其实，很多信徒常问说自己的十字架到底是什么？可能有些人在生活中有一些比较有挑战性的问题，就会认为说那是自己的十字架。但其实当主耶稣说要天天背起自己的十字架来跟从祂时《路9:23》，那是指我们整个的生命生活以听从基督为中心的运作。可能我们早上需要早起服侍家人，或是我们一天生活有需要应付的忙碌，或是我们已经很累了还需要到教会去，或是心里无力但还是需要牧养一些有需要的肢体，我们当时候怎么因信（主的话）而在心灵里得听主的声音与得着力量来完成主托付我们的事。在这样天天的生命生活的运作中，我们就是天天过着背起十字架的生活了。但是，我们在这舒服与安逸的环境中不是这么容易建立起这样的生命生活体系，就是已经建立起了，时不时又会体贴自己的意思行事。没错，舒适环境是信徒被十字架的最大阻拦了，所以我们生活在舒适社会中，也目前生命里没有什么极大挑战的信徒，我们必须知道怎么实实在在的过着背起十字架的生活。

We are living in a relatively comfortable environment. Our nation is democratic; we have the freedom to faith, and not subjected to serious persecutions to our faith. We are living in a society with advanced technology, comfortable and hassle-free. Most of the times, our needs can be satisfied. Unless we meet certain unbearable trials, such as illness, depression, broken marriages, children going astray, or being disowned by family due to our faith, “suffering” remains a mere concept to a lot of us. Possibly, to most of us, the problems that trouble us could be: our children’s results are not good, the work is busy, frictions in interpersonal relationships, the pressure to finance our housing and cars etc. Sometimes, when we open the Bible and read how the great people in the Bible suffered for the sake of Gospel and paid the price, we may feel that relatively, our problems are insignificant, or we may even feel that most of our worries are unnecessary. Basically, our problem is “not having problems.” When we do not have problems, we are unwilling to face problems, neither do we deliberately go and find problems. But we will be brought to another reality, that is, how do we carry the Cross and follow the Lord genuinely? When the Bible tells us, “everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted”, or “if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory,” we can’t help but ask, “where is the pain?” or “if we truly face such pain, can we overcome it?” Sometimes, we may have succumbed to our difficulties overtly, not coming to church meetings because of busyness or loss of strength, having no heart to evangelize to others, our hearts also retain some accusations. Actually, we need to bear a clean and upright spirit before God. We cannot keep these accusations and self-rebukes in our hearts, and then go and find another method to soothe our conscience, such as: we read more of the Scriptures, we serve the Lord more, we give more offerings, or we take part in some Christian programmes. Of course we do all these, but we can never escape our conscience that is already illuminated by the Truth – that is, today, are we leading a Cross-bearing faith? If today, some people ask me, “Are you a Christian who carries the Cross?” Can we answer “yes” with a clear conscience? To such question, we cannot say we do carry our Cross because we give tithes and attend the weekly Bible study. This question is related to the conscience of our faith, the focus of our lives and the priorities of our living. This question concerns our mindset (the mindset that centers around biblical teaching), our emotions (continue to love and desire the Lord), will (continue to seek the Lord, submit to His will), and thus we are clear of the Cross given us, and thus practically carry it. It is not determined by certain religious acts. In fact, many ask what is their Cross? Perhaps, to some, they encounter some challenges in life, and assume that those are their Cross. But when Lord Jesus said we are to carry our Cross and follow Him <Lk 9:23>, it is referring to whether our living and lives are centered on Christ. Perhaps, in the morning we need to wake up and serve our family, or we have the day of busyness to handle, or we are already very tired, yet we still come to church, or we are feeling powerless, but we still need to shepherd some brethrens in need – at that moment, how can we hear the voice of the Lord in our spirit through faith (God’s Word), and thus receive the strength to accomplish the tasks entrusted to us. In such daily living, we are thus carrying our Cross daily. Certainly, the biggest hindrance to it is the comfortable environment. We live in a comfortable society, and some believers do not face great challenge in their lives currently. We should know how to live a life of carrying the Cross genuinely.
