The Gospel is the power of God, that brings salvation to everyone who believes. But if there is no one who preaches, how can people hear; if people have not heard, how can they believe, if they do not believe, how can they call on the Lord? Even though there are much holy and righteous works in the church, God first places the mystery of the gospel in the mouths of Man to be preached such that people can hear and call to the Lord for salvation. Truly, preaching the word is the most important work in the whole of history and it should not be ignored by believers. If no one in the family preaches the word (testify for the gospel), the whole family will naturally be filled with the spirit of secularism, and becomes more and more carnal. If no one preaches the word, believers gradually become filled with humanism, their hearts cannot see the glory of God and they will be attracted by the topics and pleasures of this world. Preaching the word is essential in every generation. If there is no preacher, the word of God cannot be heard, or be valued by people, the Holy Spirit in the hearts of saints gets replaced by the desires of people. It will then be like the time of Eli the priest, where the word of the Lord was rare and there were not many visions <1 Sam 3:1>. At times, believers hear the word but cannot live it out, but because there is the word of God, the conscience of Man continues to rebuke them such that there is the possibility of renewal. Therefore, in every era, the greatest challenge that the church faces is that of preaching the word. First, it is the challenge to stop the word of God from being distorted (this is something which our church continues to be alert in, and keeps reforming). Second, it is the challenge of not conquering all obstacles to preach the truth. <Ecc 11:1> Cast your bread upon the waters, for many days you will find it again. Actually, preaching the word is itself not a spirit of looking inwardly. This is because the essence behind the word of the gospel is for man to be reconciled with God. Therefore, a person who truly preaches the word, does not do so for the revival of his own church or the growth of the church’s own ministries, but rather, it is to come out of our own comfortable boundaries so that people can hear the gospel and together, enjoy the benefits of the gospel. This will require much time, money and energy in the process. Also, in the ministry of preaching the word, many people plan many ways to attract people to listen to the word (e.g. they joke, they bring out the theories of the world, or they shorten the time to preach the word). There are also many people who plan many ways to deliver a piece of wonderful message so that it excites people. Some theological schools also over-emphasize lessons on preaching the word (homiletics). Actually, sometimes when people learn more through these lessons, they find themselves unable to bring out the truth. Instead, their message is being packaged to include eloquence and human wisdom. Paul only instructed the saints to pray for him to have the words and the boldness to preach the word. Whether it is a preacher or a believer, in general, we are all called to be messengers for this gospel. The fields where we are placed in daily is where we have to share the word. If we have already known the gospel, what we need is nothing but for words and boldness to be given to us. This does not come from a person just knowing the gospel but it is also given to us by the Holy Spirit through the prayers of all saints. Therefore, Paul instructed the saints to pray for him for words to be given to him and for boldness. When the saints recognised the importance of Paul preaching the word, their prayers brought about effectiveness such that the Lord’s servant could make known the mystery of the gospel.
