Prelude:
· Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows with blessing will also reap with blessing. <2Co 9:6>
Read <Phm 1:17-25>
1. Restitution (restoration) must be completed.
1) <v18> Through Paul gracious restitution, the slave had become indebted to his minister.
18 But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge that to my account.
2) <v19> Paul confidently and indirectly requested Philemon to blot out and cancel Onesimus' debt.
19 I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand, I will repay it (not to mention to you that you owe to me even your own self as well).
3) <v20> Paul: may we have the same "bowels" in Christ with regards to granting mercy.
20 Yes, brother, let me benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ!
4) <v21> How boldly Paul intercedes: be reminded how far men are from true repentance.
21 Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, since I know that you will do even more than what I say.
2. The unknown belong to God, grace is needed to follow God, so we must be wary of claiming merit and zeal for ourselves.
1) <v22> In the suspense of hope, Paul prays for grace.
22 And at the same time also prepare me a lodging, for I hope that through your prayers I will be graciously given to you.
2) <v23-25> Some like Demas will leave, therefore we must pray for steadfastness.
23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you,
24 as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow workers.
25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
