Proverbs contain many standards of handling men and matters. However, the emphasis of these standards is the heart of man to fear the Lord. God always blesses man based on his inner heart. However, God also does not annul the importance of actions. Man is created to have soul and flesh, demonstrating that God values man’s spirit and actions. Holistically speaking, God blesses man through 2 channels. First is looking directly at whether his spirit is willing to love, listen to and follow the Lord. Second is to bless him through how the spirits of people around him (including non-believers, but in particular those who love the Lord) reflect toward him. Therefore, the reason for the Bible emphasizing man’s actions is because man’s way of handling people and matters will contribute to people’s heart and attitude toward him. The God who dwells within man’s heart will reward or discipline him by looking at this. Spiritual man will know this, and thus always pays attention to the state of his spirit, and will be at peace with others with all his heart, all his soul and all his strength. He will always guard himself to not only refrain from committing willful sins, but also not doing hidden wrongs towards others. However, one cannot do this by relying on man’s ethics and morals, nor man’s righteousness or feelings. Rather, when a person starts to revere God, his heart will constantly receive the teaching of the Holy Spirit, and from there develops a godly character. Through this, his way of handling men and matters can then be appropriate and receive the commendation of God and men. Hence, believers should pursue godly character constantly.
