It is the Holy Spirit’s work that a person can believe in Christ. Everytime a believer hears the word of God, how deeply he understands, and how clearly he believes is also the work of the Holy Spirit. The work of the Holy Spirit is the initiative of God. However, from the point of view of man, it is how much you need God in your spirit. Man’s need for God in his spirit is not related to his wisdom and determination, but the purity and uprightness of his spirit. Only in this way can he truly know God as God, and see God’s will as absolutely good. Thus, today we have to understand how the Holy Spirit will help we believers, so that we can understand the truth, feel the truth and live out the truth. When Paul spoke about the mysteries of God in <Ep 1: 3-10> (His glory and His predestined will in Christ), we have to know how all these come upon our lives. How does God’s predestination and creation of all things, and His guidance of all peoples relate to me today? If we do not know all these clearly, our faith and prayers today will be very weak, and will be confined to everyday affairs and temporary goals. Today, there are indeed many believers who do not know God’s eternal will and the dignity of their own life in God’s eternal will. Thus, their hearts cannot produce calls with thanksgiving, hope and power, and in their practical living, they cannot connect with the eternal truth. In addition, believers seem to have much knowledge concerning God, but their own hearts cannot match with God’s (e.g.: God is glorious, but I often feel ashamed; God is loving, but I often feel inferior; God is righteous, but I often feel unjustly treated; God is abundant but I often feel poor, etc). This is the vast discrepancy between the God we know in our rationality and how we understand ourselves in our spirits, such that we cannot truly be involved in God’s glory, authority, plan, etc. This is just like a prince who does not comprehend how his father, the king, loves him, values him and centres on him to plan for the country. This will directly affect the strength in the prince’s heart today and the fruits of his life. The truth is, our knowledge of God and of the dignity of our lives are complementary. Even if we currently still have weaknesses, we absolutely cannot deny the blessings that have come to me through Christ. Thus, when Paul heard that the believers in Ephesus had believed in Christ under the election of God, he earnestly prayed for them, asking the Holy Spirit within them to （1）let them truly know God (how God’s glorious work in Christ already came to them); （2）enlighten the eyes of their hearts, so that they can see their dignity (calling, inheritance, power), in order that they can lead a victorious and powerful faith living.
