God pays close attention to his whole spiritual body (universal church) and all the individual churches that belong to Him. Therefore, how glorious a church is in the eyes of God is dependent on how much the church has received God’s heart. Simply said, God has three intentions for an individual church. These are 1) be as one; 2) equip His people for works of service; 3) build up the body of Christ. Therefore the Holy Spirit bestows three things upon the church. First thing is the truth (or: complete truth). Only when believers receive the same truth, can they preserve the heart given by the Holy Spirit, to be as one. Because, to be as one is not organisational spirit, but having similar life’s purpose, perspectives and methods. Second, Holy Spirit also bestow gifts on the church, therefore every believer (regardless of his conditions) has a gift which belongs to him to build up the church. Thirdly, the Holy Spirit also gives the Great Commission and all kinds of minstries to the church – to evangelise. This is not just the command Lord Jesus gave his disicples before His ascension, but it is what the Holy Spirit has been exhorting the saints to do throughout 2000 years of church history. Therefore, no matter which church or denomination, if they take the work of evangelism lightly and is self-conceited with their clarity of doctrine, that church or denomination will go into decline very quickly. Similarly, if a believer does not evangelise, he will stop receiving God’s anointing and grace. His many gifts will gradually become an ordinary competency of the world, which are neither able to save souls, nor build up the church, instead they will bring about destructive work. Today, the word of the Lord is telling the church “to equip for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up’. In fact, the purpose of existence of all the churches that are on earth today is to receive the eternal body during the Lord’s arrival. As we walk alone towards this purpose, the enemy Satan will use all kinds of deception and evil to hinder churches from their missions. A common way is to distort the truth so that believers lose the heart to be as one. Another way is to get believers to be solely concerned about their own business and neglect church’s work in expanding the kingdom. Or it is to make the church feel discouraged and powerless in its lack and limitations. The truth is, in all these states, God has never left the church. On the contrary, God has already prepared every good and perfect gift, for saints to build, protect and serve the church. If a church grasps the purpose of equipping people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up, it will surely see the Holy Spirit’s infinite help. Through that, the church will fulfill the mission that the Lord has entrusted to it on earth, just like the Book of Relevation’s Smyrna church (though they had afflictions and poverty, in the Lord’s eyes, they were rich) and Philadelphia (had little strength, yet kept the Lord’s word, so the key of David was given to them).
