The Lord says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”. If good works become our pressure and burden, those are not the works that God desires, neither can it bring about the power (light) of the Holy Spirit. In fact, the good works of Christians have fundamental differences with those of the Gentiles (or non-believers). Christians’ good works has several characteristics: ① Having gone through regeneration (received new temperament in Christ); ② through prayer (experiencing the help and power of the Holy Spirit, enabling us to understand God’s perfect will in our hearts and be strengthened); ③ tested by trials (so that our motives for good works become purer, such that we solely do for the Lord and receive from Him); ④ Give glory to God (after performing the good works, realize that it is not from oneself, but from the Lord who works in our hearts). Of course, when a person is truly born again, he will surely experience the Holy Spirit working through his new temperament, and gladly perform the good works. At that time, he may give up some bad habits, or be liberated from some weaknesses in his behavior. He may begin to be gracious to others and bless them, to glorify God. But good works is a process of sanctification, and it grows together with a believer’s faith and understanding of God’s perfect will. Therefore, a believer’s good works is not meeting a standard. On the contrary, if it is measured by standards, it is rigid and will quickly degenerate into religious positioning. Instead, the good works in Christ is an infinite growth. Take for example, a person living in hatred starts to forgive those who have sinned against him after accepting the Lord, but the Holy Spirit will make him understand that he cannot just stop at forgiving. He must love, edify and pray for the souls of others. After that, as he is loving others, he finds some people detestable, or in other words, cannot get along with some people due to personality clashes. At that time, he must purify his own motivation to love others in the Lord, receive the heart and resolve from the Holy Spirit to love others. After some time, he may realize that his love does not help others to grow. So he must now love others with the wisdom of the Lord, so that his love does not hinder the growth of others. Therefore, in the good works of loving others, we will go through many trials, so that we have a sincere and pure devotion to love God and men. So, we need not be rebuked for not loving others enough, because our good works will become purer. But we must also not allow ourselves to be complacent, but to continue to be anointed by the Holy Spirit, unceasingly refining ourselves in doing good works.
