In our journey of evangelism, perhaps the areas where we have greatest difficulty in are the matter of enabling one who is stubborn to be softened and accept the grace of the Lord. This difficult situation is not only encountered by an evangelist stepping into a forlorn land attempting to spread gospel to a tribe of people who are hardened in their hearts, stubbornness is very real. How they look down on Jesus’s name, the inclinations to worship idols, holding onto cultural practices, the feelings that are based on secular thinking – all these make us disappointed and helpless; at times, we even have great barriers in our hearts when we try to share gospel with them. On the other hand, to believers who are deep asleep, cold or self-satisfied, the church faces another challenge – i.e. how to awaken those who are deep asleep in spirit, ignite the fervor in those who have become cold, and humble the self-satisfied brethrens. In fact, what makes it so difficult is the strong and powerful flesh (old self) in man - this refers to the unwillingness to enter into the spirit and be broken down, mourn and seek after God; in contrary, they remain in their current level of faith and be self-satisfied. Such state absolutely cannot lead one into seeing the glory of the Lord, neither can he rely on the Holy Spirit to evangelize to people around him. Therefore, in summary, we encounter 2 great problems. First, it is to evangelize to those who do not believe in the Lord; second, it is to evangelize to believers who are deep asleep or cold, spiritually. These two are extremely difficult tasks because we have to face man’s hardened spirit. How to cause one to willingly come before Lord in humility, and be led by Lord’s silken fetters? In fact, God’s power can transform their hearts! All the more we have to face the Lord who can accomplish all things and transform man’s hearts when we’re with such people who are stubborn or in their folly moments. This is because the life of gospel can soften such people, the power of the Holy Spirit is able to change them. Then, who can preach forth the life of gospel? Who can bring out the power of the Spirit? It’s the saints who truly believe in the truth and power of prayer. Such people will never be hindered by their powerlessness or people who oppose them; instead, in all these difficulties and resistances, he will look up to the Lord more closely and receive revelation from the Lord. He is able to share the gospel more holistically, thoroughly and earnestly, moving the Holy Spirit into work mightily.
