Today, we see Paul recommended two praiseworthy Christ workers – Timothy and Epaphroditus. These two workers were Paul’s capable assistants. Both of them attended to his personal needs while he was in prison, and also greatly supported him in his gospel works, in areas where he was constrained. If it wasn’t for these 2 workers, Paul’s gospel ministry could be hindered by his imprisonment, and the churches of various areas may lose touch with Paul, unable to bring each other news. Here, we need to understand that the connection and communication of saints are very important because we need to be in touch to understand each other’s news, and thus giving rise to conviction and earnest intercession. Paul loved the Philippi church, and the Philippi church was also very concerned about Paul’s situation and the gospel ministry because of workers like Timothy and Epaphroditus, and their roles. From today’s verses, we see 2 things: First, no matter how great Paul’s faith was, he was still limited. He could only push through the gospel works effectively through the support and intercessions of the co-workers. Whether it was interceding for the saints, writing letters to the church, preaching gospel in Rome, he needed his coworkers to assist and bring him news. This is because the ministry of God’s servant requires accurate conviction to reach an accurate decision. In fact, a spiritual leader only needs the help of a few coworkers who are faithful and with understanding to manage things well. Further, in gospel ministry, “bridging work” is very essential. Many believers only value the evangelical works at the frontline, overlooking the needful task of making connections. For example, Paul recommended Timothy to the church of Philippi and sent him to strengthen them so as to prepare Paul’s arrival later on. Also, although the transportation was difficult then, Epaphroditus was sent by the Philippi church to give financial aid to Paul, and then returned to the church with Paul’s news. The repeated coming back and forth enabled the blessed church to receive Paul’s news continuously, thus able to participate in this holy gospel work. (In fact, not only missionary work, even the salvation of our family and relatives require such a bridging work). From such interaction we can see that in the background, God is planning for His saints to receive inheritance together. When saints, for the sake of gospel, have such exchanges and selfless partnering, God receives glory through it, speeding up the spreading of gospel and building of churches, and accumulating glory and crowns for all saints. Today, some churches are complacent or only concern about their own survival, and are unwilling to go beyond their comfort zone in evangelical work. Some just want to do great work, not doing their best in this bridging work and have partial understanding in the mission places. Hope that through today’s message, church can see the true spirit of evangelism and missionary.
