Paul said, “I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish” <Ro 1:14>. Why would he have such an indebted heart to different kinds of people? Is it because he was exceptionally great or kinder than other people? No! This is God’s grace, and it came from his knowledge of the gospel. What’s his understanding of the gospel? He made 3 statements for the gospel. He said, “I’m not ashamed of the gospel”, because this gospel enabled him to know that all his conditions, background, and encounters were unique, all for the purpose of accomplishing God’s glorious plan. Second, this gospel is the power of God. Gospel is the power, when a person knows this gospel, naturally it produces power in his heart, enabling him to transcend all narrow and limited perspective and sees God’s presence in all things. Third, this gospel is working non-stop in his heart, not only saving, transforming and sending him forth, it also saves and transforms all who believe. What then is the indebted heart? 1) No longer self-centered in thinking about others, thus not being hurt or disappointed by others; 2) Being moved by the ignorance and stubbornness of others into developing a consistent heart of compassion and endurance, continue to look for new convictions to bless them; 3) Not being boastful and contented after blessing others, instead, continue to bring their lives into more blessed grounds. Therefore, it is a big key and giant connection from [knowing the gospel] to having an [indebted heart]. This connection reflects Paul’s experience in his faith from the day he was being called to the moment he wrote the book of Romans. 1) He began to preach the gospel practically and was being led to evangelizing to all kinds of people. In this he truly saw how people responded to the gospel, and also realized how helpless and harassed was the spirit of man; 2) In the face of all ignorance, hardening or even persecution from Jews and Gentiles, he was all the more being led into a state of meditating about the gospel and received the light of the Holy Spirit. Often, we lose grace easily in evangelizing to others because we see our own blessedness and why others cannot be as blessed; if not, we may withdraw to ourselves and coward up when we encounter the negative responses of others and have grievances and hurts. However, in such situation, Paul actually saw that he had received such a supreme grace, and the self-centered heart slowly died when he was persecuted or encountered resistances. Here he realized that he was compelled to preach the gospel because woe to him if he didn’t (not because of fear, rather, he was being driven by the value); 3) He had confirmed that everyone needs the gospel. When the truth the gospel is preached, Lord’s people are liberated and people who resist it will be worse. Specially, when he repeatedly confirmed that people responded to God’s grace (the hardened were softened, the once selfish man became selfless), the heart of indebtedness developed in him involuntarily from the gospel he knew.
