The earnestness one has towards evangelism is absolutely rooted and grounded (have reasons, process, and confirmation). Firstly, we need to know that a true evangelist is not a fanatic, nor the sort who wants to show himself just because he can speak the truth; neither is he a worker with a heart of indebtedness and thus would want to do something for God. An evangelist sent forth by God is one who clearly knows God’s calling on him, and knows the footsteps that God is leading him in. Ask: How will he know? Is it because he feels it, or he experiences it subjectively? Or are there some practical situations that press him into spreading the gospel? In Paul’s journey to Rome, we see how rooted and grounded he was in receiving God’s calling, and confirmed that the journey was to Rome. (1) Paul had known and received the nature of the gospel (redemptive – the heart of needing to save man’s souls regardless; One and only – must talk about the only way, truth and the life; distinctive – see that mankind has fallen into the belief, culture, current, background that are separated from God, all the more he needed to preach the gospel so as to save people from the wrong presuppositions; multiply – see the living nature of the gospel, just like a cell it multiplies, and thus the more he preached the more earnest he became; universal – if it stops at a crowd or tribe, the gospel will be restricted, gradually becoming rigid and its nature will change, hence, only when he continued to preach the gospel could he discover the infinite blessings of the gospel). The nature of gospel is intrinsically powerful, and it will change the heart and spur the heart so as to save all who believe. But merely knowing the nature of gospel isn’t enough, from here, it has to: (2) always serves the Lord in our spirit, only then can we firmly know the perfect will of God in us, and the mission He has sent us forth to complete. For gospel does not only cause us to be propelled rationally, instead, it is the living and active conviction of God that is leading the people who truly believe. God wants to influence, direct, dispatch us in our spirit. God wants to co-work with His people to complete the Great Commission. Therefore, when Paul was writing to the Roman believers, he especially mentioned how he interceded for the Roman believers before God. Through this intercession, he received God’s guidance and see God opening ways, and increasingly being affirmed by God on matters concerning Rome. In particular, through this intercession, Paul had clearer understanding on the spiritual gifts (the profound teaching and grace of the gospel) that he wanted to give them. Actually, when an evangelist receives such evidences in his spirit (being spurred to go into certain crowd, and also have surely received the message for them), he will have confidence toward the gospel area he is venturing into and the spiritual battle that he is going to fight. Therefore, we will know that an evangelist is not being moved by relying on the [rational] understanding of the gospel only, he also receives a [disposition] for the gospel (through how he is always serving Lord in the spirit, and then being led into praying for a crowd continuously, Lord will convict and instruct him in his heart, so that he is more sure of the road he has to take and the word he has to speak). After Paul had received this duo side of the mystery of the gospel, he wrote to the Roman believers and wanted to give them his conviction so as to prepare their hearts. Because of this, the gospel messenger and all saints would have grace added upon them in their mutual interaction in the spirit. Lord’s servant will also overcome all difficulties because of their prayers, so that he could be with them to receive and preach the grace of the gospel, in order for all to receive crowns together.
