基督信仰是追求完全的,但也是真实的。我们主说:“你们要完全,像我们的天父完全一样”,但是主也知道我们还活在罪身中的真实情况导我们致受到那种种的恶欲影响。在此,律法不但无法帮助我们行善,还会发动我们里头的恶欲,使我们更加无能行善。在我们这极其复杂的性情中,神知道唯有救恩与救恩所带来的圣灵能叫人得胜恶欲,行出超出律法的善(活出圣灵的果子)。但试问我们又怎能真依靠圣灵而活呢?圣灵又与我们人的本性而来的意志有何不同呢?确实上,在我们的天路旅程中,我们那刚重生的新生命是多么的因我们从神所得的救赎恩赐欢畅,但过不久我们很快会发现那老旧的心思、意念、习惯、做法又很快会占据我们,将我们掳去做我们内里的新人不想做的事。特别,当我们再多认识神话语的道德律时,我们内心里虽是“阿门”的接受,也愿意达到那地步,但实际上会发现要达到那地步往往比登天还难。这就是一个重生的信徒将会真实面临的善恶之战了。确实上,《罗5》描绘了神的极其丰盛的恩典,《罗6》将我们带入救恩之门(与耶稣同死、同埋葬、同复活),从此我们成为一个义的奴仆(喜爱神的圣洁公义)。但若实际要活出神的义却不能靠律法,乃要靠着心灵的新样《罗7:6》。那这心灵的新样对我们这与生俱来靠肉体活的人却是很陌生。许多人在此就以自己部份的理解或老旧的性情来尝试经历圣灵的能力,结果发现不但不能得胜,反而信仰走偏。有的成为了假冒为善的信徒(外表遵行律法),有的成为了自受控告与控告他人的信徒(高举与依靠律法),有的成为了自欺的信徒(弃绝律法),这一切都是因为他们没有清楚经过《罗7,8》的心路旅程。确实上,我们在追求完全(靠圣灵)一定要真实。有许多解经家为了要维护有关圣经里的圣洁学说,或是要守着一些字句的一致观念,他们成为了不真实的人。他们对圣洁的理想所表达出来的真理往往使人无法真实的靠圣灵与罪性争战。使徒保罗在今天所读的经文中表达了他最真实的善恶之战,说到他“立志为善,却行不出那善”。这句话绝不是要给正在软弱的人借口,使他们能对罪或不圣洁的生活松懈。这乃是要描绘一个真实重生爱圣洁的信徒“对自己的罪性的痛苦”(我真是苦啊!)能如何将他带到全然靠圣灵的地步。这个向神的“虚心与哀恸”将是把我们的心思意念转向圣灵的最大力量了。倘若我们向神的痛苦到达这一步,圣灵大能的扶持和洁净将会临到我们身上。那时,我们弃绝罪与活出圣洁的意志是受到圣灵的带领。在此,倘若我们对与罪争战的现实情况避而不谈,轻描淡写的告诉人说“要靠圣灵圣洁”,那不但是无法给人答案的话,也叫人一直因无法圣洁而灰心。
Christianity pursues perfection, but it is also genuine. Our Lord said, “ Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect”. But Lord also knows that as we are still living in the reality of our sinful body, causing us to be influenced by various sinful desires. Not only is the law unable to help us in doing good, it also moves the sinful passions within us to work causing us to be even more powerless in doing good. In the totally complicated temperament we have, God knows that only by grace and Holy Spirit brought by grace can empower men to overcome the sinful passions, and do the good that is above the law (live out the fruits of the Spirit). But we may ask, how can we rely on the Holy Spirit in our living? How is Holy Spirit different from the self-will from our human nature? Actually, in our spiritual journey, our born again life is rejoicing greatly in the salvation gift from God, but later we will soon realize our old mindset, thoughts, habit and methods will occupy us once again, taking us captives by causing us to do things that the new inner person does not want. In particular, as we get to know more of God’s moral laws through His word, we could accept them in our inner hearts with “Amen” and are willing to go to that stage, but in reality, we will soon realize it is indeed an insurmountable task to reach that perfect stage. This is the war of good vs evil that a born again believer will have to face genuinely. In fact, <Ro 5> describes the grace of God that is so abundant; <Ro 6> brings us through the door of salvation (die, bury, resurrect with Jesus), become the slave to righteousness henceforth (love the holiness and righteousness of God). However, in living out the righteousness of God practically in life, one cannot rely on the law but the new way of the Spirit <Ro 7:6>. This new way of the Spirit is actually very foreign to us who have been so adapted to living in accordance to our flesh. Sometimes, people attempt to experience the power of the spirit through their partial understanding or their old temperament, eventually, they find themselves unable to overcome it. Instead, they stray away from their faith. Some become hypocritical believers (obeying the law on the outside), some become believers who accuse themselves and others (exalt and rely on the law), some turn to become a kind of self-deceived believers (abandon the law); all these happen because they have not clearly experienced the spiritual journey of <Ro 7, 8>. Actually, we need to be very honest in our pursuit of perfection (rely on the Holy Spirit). Many exegetes become impractical as they attempt to preserve the holy teaching of the bible, or the ideology behind the words. The truth revealed through their expression of holiness often can’t wrestle with the sinful nature by relying on the Spirit. Today, through the scriptures shared, apostle Paul expressed his most genuine battle of good vs evil, he said, “for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out”. Surely, this sentence does not serve to find excuse for people who are still in their weakness, cause them to let loose in the face of sin or pursuit of holy living. Instead, it depicts a believer who is genuinely born again and loves holiness, and how “he grieved for his own sinful nature” (What a wretched man I am!) actually led him to completely rely on the Holy Spirit. This “humble and contrite heart” toward God is the greatest strength that turns our hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit. If the brokenness we have is as such, the support and cleansing from the great power of the Holy Spirit will come upon us. From then on, we will be led by the Spirit in rejecting sins and living out the will of holiness. If we refrain from talking about fighting against sin, only telling people to “rely on the Holy Spirit” superficially, we will not be able to give people answer, and we may also cause disappointment in people because of their inability to be holy.
