When we know the Gospel, one of the things we most need is to introspect what shapes us. Actually, our mindset, thoughts, characters, and habits are unconsciously conditioned by the reality we are living in daily. For example: A realistic society conditions its people into feelingless people; a wife will be shaped into a strong woman because of the weaknesses of the husband; a child will be conditioned into someone who does not have views on things because he is used to being ordered around by the parents. Human’s power to survive and adapt will continuously shape them into persons of various kinds, with various kinds of belief or personality. Some realize the environment shapes them, while some are shaped without them knowing it. People who realize it may assume that such conditioning is good, while some are bad. But majority will not realize a truth, that is, due to sin, they will never be conditioned into someone who can love and submit to the Lord more and more. Because of good environment, some people may become more intelligent, cultured, creative, but the temperament we are born with, and the world that is full of evil, will prevent us from seeing “Emmanuel”. Therefore, it is in this context that we have to examine if our lives have been affected by the reality, to the extent of developing many “disbelieving attributes”. Our body, mind, soul, living, relationships, finance management etc – are they affected by reality, leading to more self-centered attributes. For examples: we are easily angered, develop prejudice easily, many negative and pessimistic views, uncontrolled in spending money, overtly thrifty, habit of scrambling, and many kinds of attributes that are produced from the influence of harsh reality. Actually, God gives us the Truth and His Holy Spirit because He is unwilling for us to be conditioned wrongly. Indeed, the reality is cruel, but what God has given us is the promise of “Emmanuel”, such that we can see the meticulous help of God and His presence in various realities. Therefore, <Jn 14:26-27>  says the Holy Spirit will instruct us in all things, and Christ has left peace with us. It is not easy for us, the layman, who is weak and limited to see God’s guidance in the crux of realities. Therefore, <Ro 8:26> says we have the help of Holy Spirit in weakness. He will intercede for us with wordless groans. His intercession is according to God’s will, so that we can see how in all things, God works for the good, and that we can receive that benefit with our hearts that love God <Ro 8:28>. The key is, how shall we receive Lord’s intercession? When the reality is very cruel, with so many injustices in this world, or when we are shortchanged by the actions and decisions of certain people, can we see the benefits given by God? If we cannot see this benefit, we will then be conditioned by the harshness. May God help us, and that we are not shortchanged in the spirit due to the encounters in reality, and step into various kinds of disbeliefs in our lives. Instead, in the realities we are in, receive the help of Holy Spirit and stand out because of the light of Truth and help of Holy Spirit.
