Actually, everyone make choices, but they do not know how to be accountable to their choices. We witnessed this (Adam pushed the blames to God and Eve) from the fall of our earliest ancestors, and this sense of “irresponsibility” is on us today. Our limited wisdom causes us to lack complete confidence in our decisions; hence, the natural inclination of men is to fearful of taking responsibility. Although some have boldness to bear it, he does not know what it entails. No one is born into this world with perfect choices, yet, when the choices made by him bring some sort of less ideal outcomes, his natural response is regret, grumbles, or blame others. But actually, what is worse is when we escape the responsibility we ought to face. When Christians say they want to follow God, does that include the need to take up responsibility? Certainly! Often, believers’ ides of “God-centeredness” remain on testing and approving the perfect will of God, but they do not realize it also involves the need to be accountable. When <Ro 12:2> tells us to examine the good, perfect, and pleasing will of God, <12:6-8> mentions about the responsibilities we ought to bear along with the roles (or: after we chose to accept the roles) received. Hence, when we face challenges or difficulties, we should never escape or shirk the responsibilities, or complain. Actually, when God calls us to be strong and courageous, that means we need to be accountable to the choices we’ve made. After we have made a choice, we have to walk with the Lord next. This is like: the married have to be bold and courageous and depend on the Lord to overcome the difficulties in marriage; after giving birth, we need to overcome the hardships of raising children; after changing a new job, we need to accept the challenges in the new job; after accepting the role, we need to accomplish what is entrusted along with the role etc. We have to go forward with the Lord in all these. We should never wander around when we meet difficulties, or groan. This is like how Israelites could no longer return to Egypt after the Exodus, and they could not return to the wilderness when they reach Jordan river. Indeed, in every decision we make, we let go of certain things, but we also gain certain things. This is inevitable, for we live in an imperfect world. Our life is imperfect, the people around us are imperfect; the surrounding is imperfect. Therefore, in the choices made, it is impossible that we only gain but never forsake certain things. For example: with kids, we will have less free time and space; when we go to work, we will surely experience work stress and people’s lack of understanding. This is a necessary reality. Despite the worldly people face these with positivity or self-confidence, God gives us the promise of <Ro 8:28>, so that we trust Him that in all things, He will work for the good of those who love him. In this promise, the most important is 【the good of those who love God】.Indeed, this scripture is not advocating a kind of positive thinking, implying that all things will be resolved naturally. Rather, this Scripture directs blessing to those who love God. We might have lost balance in making choices, but as long as we love God and depend on Him in whatever we have attained or reached, we will surely receive the good from God. We need to have fixed perspective here, with this, we will not be afraid to take responsibility; neither will we feel helpless for the awful situation. Instead, we will continue to find the next step to love God, and transcend the limitations of reality. Actually, when some people are at the crossroad of choosing and forsaking, they would rather not choose and remain status quo. This is a kind of misconception. Not choosing is also making a decision, and surely, there is also an outcome following what we didn’t choose. For example: choosing to get married will bring the agony of marriage; yet those who are afraid of this and thus choose not to marry, will also have the agony of not getting married; we have new challenges as we change our jobs, but if we don’t change, we may also remain in a bottleneck. Therefore, in life, we are always confronted with the need to choose. If the people around us suffer loss for our “not choosing”, that is also our responsibility. Instead of worrying about making the wrong choices, why not learn to be accountable to the choices made with a heart that loves the Lord?
