Gathering and dispersing are what we Christians do repeatedly week after week. We gather for camps, for The Lord’s Day. Even having meals, shopping together after meeting is a form of gathering. Indeed, we all like the feeling of gatherings, especially when we feel the bond with one another, or when we feel we share the same spirit. However, we cannot ignore the necessity to disperse after gathering, as we all have our own life and families, and the missions we need to accomplish in our living. Having said that, do we lose the communion in spirit after we disperse? After we have dispersed, do we accomplish better things through the communion in the spirit. When we believers set apart time every week, do the same thing (gather and disperse), if we do not do them with the heart of the Lord, we will easily enter into purposeless gathering, and powerless dispersing. Actually we will fall into such a state easily. In the early churches, whenever the disciples met or dispersed, their spirits were united. That is what is described in <Phil 2:2> as being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. It is not a feeling of need for one another. Some people may hang out often, but they may develop grievances with one another over trivial matters. Some people will give the people around them a boundary, making them feeling they cannot fit into the existing group. Although these people will say that they have never rejected people, but among people, they will send out such vibes. If a group cannot open up themselves to outsiders, walk out of their comfort zone and proactivelly engage others, we will automatically build a wall around them, and will give out a “cliquish” feeling <Phil 2:3>. Actually, man will naturally gather with people he likes. Just as in school, we like to eat with friends we are familiar with, and in church, we go to our familiar seats, and talk to the same people. If the people we are familiar with are not around, we will feel “unfamiliar” and then leave the unfamiliar environment. Man will naturally choose the familiar over the unfamiliar because the familiar brings a sense of security. On the other hand, when we disperse, we may immediately feel loneliness, when we eat, shop, engage people alone or speak to strangers. We will easily do out of an attitude to endure for a short while. Perhaps we have always lived with our natural inclinations and never sensed any problems. However, gathering and dispersing in the gospel gives us another understanding. The gospel first tells us that the Lord is with us. Although we may face familiar or unfamiliar groups of people, God is still there with us. In our gathering, God wants us to understand what is having communion in the spirit. That is a relationship where we value one another’s lives, not judge one another casually because of others’ weaknesses, but instead be willing to serve one another. After dispersing, although we think of one another (just as pastor thinks of the church during missions), we have a sense of purpose, to accomplish the tasks the Lord entrusted to us. Perhaps, after gathering, our tendency is to speak to brethren we are familiar with, but we are surrounded by many unfamiliar faces. The Lord who is with us definitely does not want us to follow our own will, but to engage the people that the Lord has put around us (looking to the interests of others). Actually, gathering and dispersing is the most fundamental part of life for a believer. For the things which we need to do every week, if we do not purify our hearts with the truth, then our faith will become increasingly powerless.
