Paul always said that he lived before God and men with a clear conscience <1 Ti 1:5>. Because his conscience was clear, he often enjoyed God’s authority when he was serving and preaching; when trialed, he was also fearless, and received God’s help instead < Ac 24:16>. Conscience is a spiritual mechanism placed in the heart of man by God as He created life, and gives people the standard of right vs wrong. In Latin, conscientia (conscience) means “self-knowledge of self”. It dwells in us together with our personality, co-knowing the deepest thoughts, inclinations, motives, feelings, and desires in our hearts. Before fall, man’s conscience did not oppose himself in any way, for what he thinks, feels, and do, are no different from the rights and wrongs he know. Therefore, he can be fearless and bold in facing God, and love the people around him and open himself to them completely. Such is the state of man when they enjoy the most freedom and authority. However, when sin enters our lives, man’s conscience is polluted, and it can’t help but becomes his “accuser”. Why? It’s because our conscience knows all our hearts and minds, and the actions unknown to others, therefore, it gives us complaints. Moreover, Romans tells us that this conscience (the heart of right vs wrong) will personally accuse us on the day when God will judge men’s secret, revealing the transgressions in us <Ro 2:15-16>. Try thinking, when all our mistakes are exposed, it is utterly scary and embarrassing! For the function of this conscience still remains in all who are fallen today, thus man dislikes the voice of this conscience greatly, and tries to drown it. Hence, we see that in this world, some tyrants would slander those who spoke the truth in particular, some politicians will oppress the opposition voices – all these take place because those who speak is supportive of that conscience that is now accusing the person involved. On individual level, we see how people put up a pretense before others because they dislike the voice of this conscience, or they attempt to rationalize certain incorrect thoughts and actions. Actually, they thought by doing so they will feel peaceful, but when the complaints from the conscience are drowned this way, it will turn into the voice of punishment and fear. How can we tell? From the fact that he cannot face the righteous God all the more. Therefore, the fear and troubles in the hearts of such people are apparent. Try thinking, as he lives in this world created by the all-good and all-loving God, and also before the conscience that accuses him, how can he be devoid of the fear that is from his “sense of being judged”? When he said, “No! I am not afraid at all! I have no wrong!” Actually, his soul becomes even more fearful (unpeaceful) for the lies he is now making. A lot of religious people actually feel the realness of the accusations from this conscience, thus they go into deep meditation and develop the good deeds and thoughts that are accountable to their consciences. This becomes what man calls as religion. However, the standard of morality comes from man, it cannot reach God’s standard. As a result, men still feel helpless and fearful towards life and death, blessings and disasters; man continue to sin, the demands from the laws of religions are also increasing. Hence, on the issue about conscience, it cannot be dealt through good deeds or self-will. How then can this be dealt with? The answer is, man has to be forgiven by God. Aside from confession of sins, repentance, and accepting God through the redemption in Christ, no one can stand before God. To us who are already saved by God, we now face another genuine issue, that is, every time as we learn about the truth, we soon realize that we will fall into a state of knowing the good but fail in carrying it out, thus the conscience is rebuked. As we live in this weak sinful flesh, how can we imitate Paul who lived by clear conscience?
