通常,当人一讲到工作,都是带着比较消极的心态来面对。我们有时常会听人说:“六七十岁了还要上班,命真苦!”或是:“这么多孩子孙子要照顾,多么辛苦?”时不时,我们也听见有人问说:“为何人要做工,这是多么辛苦!”。人总是觉得工作是一种很辛苦的劳动,反以退休、坐享其成为目的。试问这样的想法合乎圣经吗?上帝造了第一个人之后,就将他安置在伊甸园,使他修理,看守。神这实际的举动与嘱咐说明工作,是祂为人所定的。从一个人生到世界来,他学爬、学走、上学、上班、管理家庭、照顾孩子、照顾孙子、或是服侍教会、服侍众人、等,都是在工作的范围里。在这些实际的劳动中,他带出创造主创造的精神与美德。确实,从神的大创造里,我们人在跟从主时不断的带出许许多多的小创造 –例如:创造乐器与乐曲、创造交通工具、创造电脑与网络、创造新的合作关系、等。在这样实际的劳动中,人的世界、社会、家庭也受到保护。试想,我们若没有劳动,这社会能发展吗?我们没有实际的服侍教会,福音事工能够被广传吗?甚至在小范围中,若我们没有做家务,家里会舒适整洁吗?若是父母没有负起责任教导孩子们,孩子能成为出色与能干的人吗?在这一切里,神的名要得荣耀,福音也要被高举与广传。所以在此,工作本是荣耀的,不是卑贱的;它本是人应当享受的,不是要逃避的。一个人若停止做工,他的创意性质就会削弱,他的脑袋就会慢慢退化,心就会慢慢被那卑贱无用的事取代。一餐过一餐、一天过一天、这样得过且过的浪费光阴与人生,他也就渐渐发现自己与神为他创造的世界脱节,周围的人(家人)也无法借着他得着任何益处。原来,神的创造本是完美的,祂连那完美的精神也放在人的工作里。但是,自从人堕落之后,人对“工作”的单纯心态受到罪的侵入了。《创3:17-19》告诉我们说地因人的犯罪受诅咒,也必长出荆棘和蒺藜。人也必汗流满面才得户口。确实,从人犯罪后,他面对了工作环境中实际的难处。种地有难处、工作有拦阻、管理人不容易、等。有如今天常听人说:“工作越来越压力,人际越来越难搞、赚钱越来越不容易”。这是实际外在的难处,且都是罪所带来的。但其实,比这些外在实际的难处更加严重的问题是人的心被罪污染,以至智慧、能力都被夺走。确实,人离开神之后,在也无法有充足的灵力、智力与体力来管理治理万有。他最多靠着自己有限的力量劳动,以致不断的受自己的有限辖制。因此,那原本应该享受的工作成为了无意义的劳动。在工作当中也被卷入许许多多的是非和无能感,且常常在工作中落入愁苦与埋怨的光景。但是,神借着基督给予我们的救赎绝不是只有将我们带回天家而已。祂救赎的能力也要恢复神给予我们原有的工作意义,以至我们能重新得着正确的工作心态。我们不能成为一个只有上教会,却被懒惰的性情辖制或带着得过且过的心态过日子的基督徒。我们在工作当中要不断得着圣灵的引导与能力,且继续带出新的创造,天天祝福周围的人。
Usually, men carry a rather pessimistic mentality when talking about work. We often hear people saying, “My life is a pity for I am working into my 60s!” or “it is a toil to take care of many kids and grandchildren.” At times, we also hear people saying, “Why do man have to work, it is so hard!” Men often feel that work is an activity that is difficult, thus always aim for retirement and enjoyment. Are all these biblical? After God had created the first man, He placed him in the Garden of Eden and instruct him to take care and maintain it. The practical action and instruction of God show that God establishes work for men. From the moment a person is born into the world, he learns how to climb, to walk, goes to school, work, manage the family, take care of children, and then grandchildren, or serving the church and all, etc – all these are within the boundaries of work. In all these practical works, he brings out the creativity and virtues of the Creator. Indeed, in God’s big creation, we always have a lot of small creations in following God – eg: create musical instruments and music, create transportations, create computer and Internet, create new working relationships etc. In all these practical work, man’s world, society, and family, receive protection. Try thinking, if we do not work, can this society progress? If we do not serve church practically, can the gospel ministry spread? Even in small zone such as our family, if we do not do the house chores, can our family be comfortable and clean? If the parents do not take up the responsibility to teach the children, can they become outstanding and capable people? In all these, the name of God is to receive glory, the gospel is to be lifted up and spread. Hence, in this, work is inherently glorious and not lowly; it is inherently what one ought to enjoy, and not escape. If a person stops working, his creativity will weaken, his brain will slowly deteriorate, and his heart will be replaced with the lowly and useless things. One meal after another, one day after another, wasting time in his living, and he soon realizes that he is disconnected with the world that God has created for him; and the people surrounding him (the family) will not be edified through him. Actually, God’s creation is inherently perfect, and He even input that perfect spirit in the works of men. However, after the fall, the pure mentality towards “work” has been infiltrated by sin. <Gen 3:17-19> tells us that the ground is cursed because of human’s sin, and will produce thorns and thistles. Man need to sweat for their food. After the fall, man has since faced practical difficulties in the working environment. There are challenges when working on the ground, managing people become difficult etc. Just as what people commonly say today, “the work is getting more stressful, the interpersonal relationships are harder to manage, and it is harder to earn money.” These are genuine external difficulties, and are brought by sin. However, the more serious problem than all these external difficulties is the corruption of human’s heart by sin, such that their wisdom and power are robbed away. Indeed, when man is separated from God, he cannot have sufficient spiritual, intellectual, and physical power to manage and steward all things. The most he can do is to depend on his limited strength to work, and continue to be constrained by his own limitation. Therefore, the work, which he is supposed to enjoy, has become meaningless chores. While working, he is also absorbed into the many senses of right and wrong, or powerlessness, become frustrated and grumble about his work. However, through Christ, the redemption that God has given us is not merely to bring us to the heavenly home. The power of His redemption can also restore the meaning of work which God has originally given us, such that we can once again receive the correct working attitude. We cannot become a Christian who only attends church, yet being controlled by laziness or living our days recklessly. In our work, we need to seek the guidance and power of Holy Spirit, bring out new creativity continuously, and bless the people around us.
