Generally, our Christian culture may appear to be more conservative. When believers have family, the main focus will be on the family and church. That time, our circles of lives seem to shrink, and our conversations with others evolve around work, children, or church matters. At time like this, our influence on non-Christians through interactions will reduce. Among God’s people, we see how middle-aged unable to communicate with younger people. People with kids cannot give enough care to the singles or those who are childless. We may also discover that our non-Christian friends are getting lesser, and the relationships remain superficial. Certainly, we all face realities in life, especially people living in the city, we are constrained by the busy rhythm of life. However, the anointing of God is not constrained. The more we grow, the more we accumulate experiences; the more we are blessed, the more we should have a lively spirituality. Paul said that he became all things to all people, so that by all possible means he might save some. This is not a mere concept, rather, it has to be intentional through our prayers, continuously affirming it, and examine God’s perfect will, and then challenging selves in various constraints we are in, in order to live out such temperament and life. Sometimes, our environment is one of the limiting factors; but us yielding to the dilemma in our hearts represents another limitation. In particular, to a person who has been in Christian faith for a long time, he may fall into an unhealthy state – his speech, styles, and conversations are spiced with Christianized vibes. Because he wants to be holy, he is not accustomed to the unholiness of non-believers; because he hopes for others to be in faith sooner, thus he does not think deeper the carnal topics which non-believers are concerned about, such that he is not interested in the worldly topics they are talking about. Gradually, we are shaped into a “Christ culture” that cannot preach Christ. When Paul said that we are to evangelize to all kinds of people, he also said, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?” <1 Co 9:24>. Lets ponder, how should we run the race? Because we want to preach Christ, should we remain in our own comfort zones, or continue to run beyond this boundary and receive new experience of evangelism? For example: If we have children, do we let go all to focus on raising the children, or do we quickly learn how to raise them so that we can receive new channels and experiences of evangelism? When we have a new job, do we yearn for a comfortable living, or do we yearn to engage more people through the new working environment and experiences? In <2 Ti 2:6> Paul said: the hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. The farmer is diligent in sowing, farming, observing the weathers, and quickly harvesting when time comes; these are what we ought to be diligent in, with endurance and love, as we engage people through evangelism. However, in all these, we all face a common limitation, that is as a person grows up, his life circles shrink somehow, his physical strength is weakened, the temperament is more and more conservative, and he engages others less (therefore in church, we see the numbers multiply most exponentially in churches with more youths). Therefore, we who have remained in church for a long time, may easily fall into an unhealthy “Christianized culture”, that is, we are unable to evangelise, or can only preach Christ in the church. In this, may God gives us the power and anointing of Holy Spirit, such that we can bring gospel to new boundaries and crowds.
