Sometimes, the easier the biblical truth, the easier we may forget them. From the first day we became Christians, the most basic thing we learn is, in whatever you do, do it for the Lord, and give all glory to the Lord for all the good we have done. This is like how a Christian child willingly obey the parents, which stems from his heart of obeying the Lord; a Christian student studies diligently because he does it out of a heart of wanting to honor God; a Christian employee works hard because he does it out of obedience to the Lord; even if we do good and bless others, it is because we are doing them purely based on the sake of the gospel. Actually, this is such a basic thing in our Christian faith, yet we often forget. Even if we know, we do not continue to seek grace and make it our pursuit. Possibly, we are overwhelmed by Lord’s love on the first day we became Christians; indeed initially we may bring such beliefs in doing things, and our hearts were filled with joy and gratitude then. But experiences tell us that this is hardest to sustain. Soon, we will be led to the worldly attitude and perspective, only valuing what we see, or the benefits of doing certain things. That heart, which was innocent, selfless, do things out of love and reverence for the Lord, will soon be drowned away. As students, we may easily fall into the state of studying for our future; as employee, we may then strive hard so that we can have increment or promotion; even those who evangelize will fall into the trap of evangelizing to get numbers (not out of true love for man’s souls). It is so natural to forget the initial love! Actually, what is faith living? That is, having an absolute belief and live purely by that. If we believe that [God is living, and He rewards] <Heb 11:6>, then the motivations and attitudes of us doing anything have to extend from this truth that we have believed. If we do things with other agenda or attitude, yet we do not feel the dilemma or struggle, we will gradually enter into a “humanistic faith”. On the spiritual level, such faith does not cost you anything. For one will not cause his conscience to be uncomfortable, and he comfortably pursues his earthly ideals through human methods. But the faith that our Lord Jesus gives us is not like this. He says, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” < Mt 16:24>. “Selves” includes many areas where we work for and depend on ourselves, and it is something we often do not detect in our daily living. The outcome of “denying themselves” is surely to take up our own cross. This cross comes with a cost, and this is something disliked by our old disposition. Does our faith cost us something? Do we feel the pain of not living for selves but for the Lord? Do we feel the difficulties of depending on the Lord and not ourselves? The weight and cost of the cross are not conceptual but real, and it is also the channel through which we receive the help of Holy Spirit. On another side, Lord Jesus also tells us to be a wise person who builds the house on the rock and not on the sand <Mt 7:24-27>. Is it easy to build the house (the system of faith and framework of living) on the rock? Certainly not! For we need to dig deep into the ground to find the rock, and build the foundation there, and it is an intense work to build house on it. But in contrary, it is so easy to build a house on the sand, it saves time and hassle, and you get a house beautifully built easily. But eventually, when trials come, which one can withstand the wind and storm, and be the shelter for all? Don’t misunderstand. Sometimes, we who live in the city often feel that our lives are already very strenuous – we work very hard, we need to take care of children, we have got meetings to attend, and we feel the stretch. Actually, feeling the pinch does not mean we are carrying the cross. Instead, when we feel the pinch, we may depend on ourselves even more easily, and stop carrying the cross. Sometimes, we may also want to find shortcuts, reckless in listening God’s Word, as if it is a fast food, and we want immediate outcomes. But in the end, we may fall into a state that is more strenuous than before. Indeed, the most basic thing in our faith is also the hardest to learn. We need to put in effort and time here, and learn through trials of many kinds. Lets learn this most basic homework in 2018, that is we do not live for selves but for the Lord.
