We human are created in the image of God, with mindsets and creativity, and infinite potential to progress. According to natural principles, our physical, IQ, and emotional intelligence, are constantly progressing. As we grow, we are always hoping to unleash the potential in us. This is like how a kid, as he grows up and becomes more sensible, he naturally yearns to honor his parents even more; as a person grows in intellects, his curiosity and learning aptitude are being stirred, and he naturally wants to learn more; as we work or serve, when we seem to fit in better, we would want to do better and be more creative in it, so as to attain better results. As we ask a very simple question: Should Christians seek improvement and advancement? The answer is certain. From spiritual aspects to our living and dealing, God is willing for us to improve. Even in the simplest matter of cooking, when we do better, our hearts are also satisfied, and people who eat are also happy. Indeed, as we unleash the potential God has put in our lives, we will naturally see the glory of God. Even non-believers feel the strange sense of satisfaction as they see progression in the various areas of their lives. This is because God has put the instinct to “continue to seek improvement” in our lives. Therefore, when people say, “I don’t want to improve further”, that isn’t the true yearning of his heart. This arises because they face some obstacles as they seek improvement. The main obstacle comes from man’s sin. Sin brings comparison, jealousy, conflict, turning the heart of wanting to improve into pride or heart of self-excellence, or see how others have not improved by comparing how much we ourselves have improved. Therefore, those who improve become proud, but those who show no obvious improvement will feel more disheartened or fall into low self-esteem. As a result, some people give up the idea to improve. Besides, sin leads to indolence. Indolence causes people to yearn to reap benefits without working for it, eg: wanting improvement in studies without putting hard work into studying, or wanting obvious anointing without putting hard work into work or serving. In <2 Ti 2:5>, Paul exhorted Timothy to endure and suffer, and do the work of an evangelist. This reveals that the growth of a person is related to his diligent learning. Therefore, what hinder people from improving are indolence, the heart of wanting to reap benefits without toiling, avoiding difficulties, unwilling to face challenges etc. In the matter of seeking improvement, Christ must deal with the man’s issue with sin. If not, the improvement or regression of men will only lead to mutual destructions. However, even after we have received redemption, we still face all sorts of difficulties in this matter. A lot of people are willing to improve, but they do not know how and are thus helpless. In studies, work, serving, they do not know how to improve and thus remain in disheartenment. When people grown disheartened, he will not be able to see hope (for he sees that no matter how hard he has worked, there just isn’t any obvious improvement), and thus they start to lose strength to seek improvement in doing them. Some people face the constraints of time, environment, and physical strength. Hence, we often hear people saying they don’t have enough time, unable to put in hard work in things they ought to do, and hence there is no improvement. Sometimes, we hear old people saying, “I am old, cannot improve anymore”. This isn’t right, for aging people are also rich with experiences compared to young people. They can be lacking in physical strength, but their spirituality and the heart of reliance of the Lord can keep growing. In all these internal (helplessness in heart) and external (time and environment) reasons, God wants us to help each other to improve. Spouses need to help each other, brethren need to share each others’ burden to improve. Whether it is in spirituality, learning, thinking ability, dealing with people and things, serving, or living conditions, we ought to try our best to help each other to improve. The people in front cannot be self-contended but to help those at the back, if not their problems will one day become ours. Actually, in an imperfect and sinful world, we can never live in our own words. In a family, some family members do not know how to have self-reliance. One day when they grow up, they become lazy and not working for a living. Will they ask you to borrow them money? Will their problems transfer to you one day? Hence, when God asks us to preach the gospel to a sinful world, and instruct them in the truth in all things, so that they can submit to Lord’s instruction. Indeed, there are many missionaries who preach the gospel. They discover that, as the gospel starts to change a man’s heart, the schools, hospitals, orphanages, old folk homes etc are also built up. People’s health is taken care of, they are taught and grown in understanding, and they improve in various areas. Hence, when we bring such grand view into church, we will understand why Paul asked believers not to look only to his own interest, but also to the interests of others, for this is the heart of love given by God.
