“Freedom” is an attractive term and it is also an important term in our Christian faith. When God created mankind, He gave them free will, so that in their freedom, they may live out the glory of His creation. Robots have no freedom, animals only use their freedom for survival, only mankind can use their freedom to glorify God and fulfill all the potential in their lives. To mankind, nothing is more satisfying than the freedom given by God. Therefore, after man has fallen, he continues to seek the freedom he lost. His desire for freedom remains. Think about it. Why do people want money? Because it gives people the freedom to do many things? Why do people want to get married? Because they want to have the freedom to love (although now there are people who do not want to get married because they want freedom). Why do people seek high positions in the family and society? Because they have the freedom to decide and settle matters. From these, man has gone about imagining and feeling what freedom is about, and then striving to find it. However, the more men seek freedom, the more they are in bondages. The more they want freedom, they more they hurt themselves and people around them. Today, we see people using their freedom of speech and actions, and the result is that they hurt others. When men attain money and status, and have the freedom to do whatever they please, they lose the freedom in their hearts. They are in another form of bondage, living under an unseen pressure, or worrying about how others see them, or worrying about how they will lose what they have. Actually today, it is not hard to see that the richer a person gets, the stingier he becomes; the higher status a person attains, the prouder he gets; the more comfortable a person is, the more timid he becomes. Otherwise, it is a case of having no money, but spending more money; not being valued by others, but end up doing whatever one pleases. What is that so? Because he does not know what freedom is, and has lost the original freedom God has given him. Man is always looking for substitutes to replace the freedom that is missing in his disposition. Indeed, when man sinned, he has lost the freedom he originally possessed. Man has will but no freedom. When he has fallen, departed from the source of goodness (God), he no longer has the ability to choose good. His will can help him choose what to think and what to do, but he is making these decisions in a spiritual prison (disposition without true freedom). Today, many people seek God, and even go to church. However, they do not seek God for His goodness, but for what He can provide (material goods and meeting human needs). Actually this proves that man has not received freedom. Indeed, since men became slaves of sin, the more they crave for freedom, the more bound they are. God sees the bondages of men and the greatest bondage is that they are being blinded in their pursuit of freedom. Therefore, God sent His only begotten Son to the world. He is the embodiment of the truth and the manifestation of true freedom. From the fall of man, man cannot recognise true freedom. The Son of God who is the Word Incarnated revealed this freedom. He said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free… So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. <Jn 8:32, 36> How does Christ give us freedom? He bore our debts of sin, so that we are no longer slaves to sin. Indeed, sin traps our souls in a spiritual prison, making us ignorant (bound in the mind), making us unable to desire good and hate evil (bound in the emotions), making us unable to do good even though we know what is good (bound in the will). The spiritual forces behind these have been defeated by Jesus on the cross. However, today, we must sincerely ask how we can use this power. We must not just proclaim that we are free, but we must live freely. In Christ, we receive the freedom in our mind, enjoy freedom in our emotions and exercise our free will. Today, many believers proclaim their freedom, but they do not realize that in their thinking, emotions and decisions, they are still being influenced by the spirit that deprives them of freedom. Therefore <Gal 5:1> tells us, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” The yoke of slavery makes us misunderstand that besides Christ, we need to obey certain laws and rules to be saved. It may also make us abuse our freedom to gratify our desires. Actually, God has given us the Holy Spirit through Christ, so that we can walk by the Spirit and not gratify the desires of the flesh. This is the freedom that holy people should pursue.
