《彼前4:12》告诉我们说信徒活在这地上会面对火炼的试验。虽然那试炼我们的事是相对的，但那试炼中的炼净是绝对的。在试炼当中，我们要面对的是心里的挣扎与辛苦，如同被火烧时没有人会感到好受，所以我们的心灵会感触到那等挣扎与焦虑。另外，在试炼中其中一个最煎熬的地方也可能就是时间的漫长。倘若试炼只不过是一两天，那试炼没有太大炼净的功效。但若那试炼是长久的，一天过了一天，有时问题不但不解决，反而重复而来，在这当中也受到精神上的折腾，那就带有试炼的功效在里头了。这如同有些肢体带着长期的病痛（常要吃药、头晕、身体感到不舒服等）。有些是在婚姻中受试炼（要长久面对另一方不可理喻的脾气，或是更糟是要面对另一方的不忠）。有的是要面对信仰的逼迫，无法自由的敬拜神。这些试炼都不简单，因为是长久性的，我们的情感与精神也都在当中受尽折腾。其实，在人不能承受的试炼临到我们时，我们就会变了，如同一个器皿在经过火的时候，形状会改变。有的人是变质（变得更糟），有的人是变化（心意更新）。有些人是在试炼中会因此越来越灰心、丧胆，甚至落入对自己所信的感到疑惑。今后可能变得更脆弱（胆小怕事）或是更刚硬（处事待人更无情）。有的人却变得更加的谦顺依靠主，更有智慧处事待人，关心关注也放在天上的事。当然，我们都希望后者发生在我们身上，主的使徒们也都经历这类的试炼，成为了合乎主使用的器皿。但往往，很多信徒却摆脱不了前者的塑造。这是为什么呢？这是因为在受试炼中不认识受试炼的应许，也不认识在试炼当中所要祈求的是什么。有些信徒在试炼当中一直只有纠结在“我是否做错”的想法。虽然我们检讨是需要，但是没有信心与神同在之应许的检讨是没有用的。我们反而是会进入更多的自责与无能。另外，有些信徒因为想要逃避心里的辛苦与难受，所以心里一直拒绝在试炼中的试验。相反的，这些人一直求主改变他们的情况，将希望放在苦难的结束，或是宣告自己再也没有问题了。确实，人总是需要希望才能活下去。我们也愿意神拿走我们的苦杯，但我们在祷告中要更深的体会那试炼所带给我们的炼净，求主加添我们的信心来面对，以至将希望放在永远的家乡。让我们不要忘记，试炼是神炼净一个信徒的最好的工具，因为受过试炼的人将成为何等尊贵与合用的器皿，但仇敌也会在受试炼的人心中安放着极其恶劣的暗示。倘若我们不按着神的话来面对试炼，我们可能会浪费很多的光阴，甚至是在信仰上走圈子。所以，主的话告诉我们说，不要因火炼的试验而以为奇怪，也不要卷入灰心，我们反要进到与基督一同受苦的光景，在受苦中更加认识祂的十字架。《彼前4:12-13》

<1 Pe 4:12> tells us that when we believers live on this earth, we will face fiery ordeals. Although our trials are relative, the refinement within trials is absolute. In the midst of trials, we have to face the struggles and hardships in our hearts; just like no one will feel good while being burned by fire, thus our spirits will feel that kind of struggles and anxiety. Furthermore, the hardest part in trials is perhaps the long duration. If trials only last for one or two days, those trials will not have too much refining effect. But if that trial is a long one, day after day, sometimes not only are problems not resolved, but it also keeps recurring; in this process, one also goes through mental torture, then it brings out the effect of the trial. This is just like some brethren have chronic illnesses (always have to take medication, feel giddy, unwell physically etc). Some face ordeals in their marriage (have to face the unreasonable temper of the other party for a long time, or worse, have to face the infidelity of the other person). Some have to face persecutions for their faith, such that they cannot worship God freely. All these trials are not easy, as they are long-lasting, such that we are also emotionally and mentally tormented in the process. Actually, when we cannot endure the trials which come upon us, then we will change, just like when a vessel passes through fire, it will change its shape. Some people degenerate (become worse), some others are transformed (renewed in hearts and minds). During trials, some people will become more and more discouraged and fearful, and may even doubt what they believe in. From then on, they may become more vulnerable (timid and fearful) or more hardened (more unfeeling in the way they handle people and matters). However, some people will change to rely on the Lord even more humbly, have more wisdom in dealing with people and matters, they also place their concerns on things in heaven. Of course, we all hope that the latter will happen to us, the Lord’s apostles also all went through such trials, and eventually became instruments fitting for the Lord’s use. But often, many believers cannot help being shaped by the former. Why is that so? It is because when they are facing trials, they do not know the promises concerning trials, and they do not know what to pray for during trials. When faced with trials, some believers keep thinking “have I done anything wrong?” Although it is necessary for us to reflect, a reflection which lacks faith and the promise of Immanuel is useless. Instead, we may fall into even worse self-reproach and powerlessness. Also, because some believers want to escape the agony and suffering in their hearts, thus their hearts keep rejecting the tests during trials. On the contrary, these people keep asking the Lord to change their situations, and place their hope in the termination of suffering, or they keep proclaiming that they no longer have any problems. Indeed, humans need hope to live on. We also hope that God can take away our cup of suffering, but in our prayers, we must comprehend more deeply the refinement that is brought to us by trials, and ask God to give us more faith to face trials, such that we put our hope in our eternal home. Let us not forget, trial is the best tool by which God refines a believer, because the one who has been through trials will become a dignified instrument fit for use, but the enemy will also put in the hearts of those undergoing trials the most terrible insinuations. If we do not face trials with the word of God, we may waste a lot of time, and may even walk in circles in our faith. Thus, the word of the Lord tells us, do not be surprised at fiery trials, also do not be discouraged, but we must go into sufferings together with Christ, and know His cross better during our sufferings. <1 Pe 4:12-13>
