We humans live under circumstances and environment. Within circumstances and environment, we can get in touch with all kinds of things, human words, news, information, etc. Thus, to the ordinary people, what they can sense in realistic environment is far beyond the truth they know in their heads. Since situations and environment are so real and most direct, then can we only use circumstances and environment to discern the Lord’s guidance? Often, when we yearn for some outcomes, we always use circumstances and environment to discern the Lord’s guidance. Examples: Some people want to migrate to another country, or find an ideal job, or go to an ideal school, they all focus mainly on the circumstances and environment they encounter. Or, when we do not know the Lord’s guidance, we base only on circumstances and environment to discern God’s guidance. We often hear people say, “I did not ask for anything, but God just let me meet such a situation, or meet such a person”, and they treat this as God’s guidance. Sometimes, we will hear a believer say he never thought of taking up a job which requires working on weekends, but after job-hunting for so long, only this one company offered him the job, but as a result of that job, he has to work on the Lord’s Day; or someone said he happened to be looking for a church, not long later he discovered that there was a church near his home, then he went there. All these situations seem to match one’s own heart, but are those truly the guidance of God? Actually, to the natural person, circumstances and environment are the realest, because those are what he can directly see and sense. Thus, the natural tendency for the ordinary people is to make all judgments and decisions based on circumstances and environment. Even we who are already born again, we also make judgments and choices mostly based on circumstances and environment. Even if we are believers for a long time, we also often cannot correctly distinguish the cues different situations give us. Indeed, God is present in every situation and environment we face. But God is all the more present in His absolute and unchanging truth. When we trust and obey His truth, He will absolutely guide us in relative situations, and make us stable in all we do <Jas 1:8>. Therefore, although circumstances and environment seem very real sometimes and God also guides us through different situations, nonetheless, those are after all relative and changing. If we learned the Lord’s truth, but we cannot receive any indication in our hearts, but only react based on the situations we encounter, such as we are shaken once we hear people say anything, or we change our minds according to circumstances, then we are not receiving the truth but only taking the truth as reference. We care not about the “truth”, but about “what works”. The Bible says that such a person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord <Jas 1:7>. Because he lives in situations and not in the truth. Those who live in situations may receive benefits temporarily, but those who live in the truth will receive benefits permanently. Indeed, circumstances and environment are very real, but we must put circumstances and environment in their rightful place. If we have been reacting based on circumstances and environment all our lives, then you must ask what is the unwavering principle you rely on when making all kinds of choices? As we learn the truth, if the situation changes a little and our thoughts, views and decisions also change along with it, then how can what we learned be called “absolute and unchanging truth”? In fact, we must not misunderstand, thinking that God is an impractical God. He is not asking us to totally ignore the cues given us by circumstances and environment. There is God’s guidance in situations, environment, human words, different opinions of people, things that happened, etc, but we also have to understand that our own weaknesses and subjective perspectives can easily make us misinterpret or over-emphasize how circumstances and environment are leading us. Thus, God gives us the truth, so that our hearts can have a scale of truth, such that we will know how much weight to give to certain environment or human words.
