当这世界越来越世俗化,我们活在的地区越来越都市化,真基督信仰就会显得越来越奇怪。以国度为主要关心而活、坚定圣经的道德准则、强调圣经的唯独性与绝对性等,这类的信徒总是被视为反常,且是太过的极端,要不然就是被同类的教会信徒看为特别属灵,且是有呼召的人才能如此活。相反的,那种比较有人生与社会经验,懂得给自己保留时间,然后会将信仰和生活划分界限的信徒是被视为比较综合,且是受人接纳的信徒。其实,这是一种很微妙的时代与信仰变迁。有些信徒以信仰的名誉来说要建立蒙恩与恩爱的家庭生活,但无形中将家庭当做神。很多单身者一生侍奉神,直到他们结了婚,从此就将关注放在享受彼此的爱情。他们逐渐将儿女也当做偶像,不断的关注如何以最理想的方法来养育他们。结果,他们在这一切关注里失去了完成大使命的心。有很多教会里的信徒只专注生计与发展自己的事业而活。他们虽然将奉献带入教会,偶尔参与服侍,但他们活在世界里没有理念的挣扎。对他们来说,世界的理念与信仰的理念是能够轻易融合的。但最可悲的是他们不觉得有何不安。其实,这就是都市文化所造出来的信仰了。这类信仰形态是多么的合乎人性。它配合了人的理想和方便,让都市信徒在这样的理念找到共鸣,以致那天天背起十字架的信仰就只成为一种观念。在如此信仰变迁的都市文化中,信徒根本没有为福音受苦的观念。实际上,他们也不认为苦难与试炼在信仰中是一种现实,更不认为那是神成圣信徒的一种途径。然后再加上那包装成这么美好的“信仰教导”,如成功神学、恩典主义、释放医治、新使徒运动等。信仰已经渐渐成为一种购物商品,共由人选择与适当采纳。但是,在每个这样的时代与都市里有神拣选的子民。他们明白凡立志在基督耶稣里敬虔度日的,也都要受逼迫(有苦难)《提后3:12》。他们并非喜爱苦难,但却清楚知道真正的属灵争战里少不了内忧外患。在这当中,他们带着劳苦叹息的心怀,但也同时保持自己不以世俗为念,也不贪爱其中的享乐。他们的理念确实与一般人不同。他们争战的目的也与世人不同。世人是为了得失而争战,他们确实为了神的荣耀(保守福音给予的心)而争战。但实际的来说,若我们今日活在都市里,我们又怎么能够实际的活在这争战呢?有的人说:“都市生活有什么苦?生活条件都比以往好多了。人也都非常自满”。其实,这是表面现象而已。说这话的人并没有察觉自己的思想已经如何受掳掠。他们也没发现自己已经变得多么脆弱。使徒们受苦,但他们并非受掳掠。使徒们也有软弱,但他们并非脆弱。在敬虔度日中,我们有苦楚,也会有软弱,但我们灵里面却是自由与无愧的。今天活在都市的信徒要好好省察自己生命的光景,千万不要将机智当做智慧或是自信当做确据。倘若我们在都市生活中没有苦难,我们已经被辖制了。
As this world becomes more and more secular, the areas where we live also become more and more urbanized, true Christian belief may appear to be increasingly strange. Believers who live lives that are concerned mainly about the kingdom, are firm of the moral standards of the Bible, emphasize the exclusiveness and absoluteness of the Bible, etc, are often seen as abnormal or being too extreme. If that is not the case, fellow church believers would find them extremely spiritual, and think that only those who are being called can live like that. On the contrary, believers with more life and societal experiences, who know how to allocate time for themselves, and set boundaries between their faith and living, are seen as more balanced and are more welcomed by believers. Actually, this is a subtle change in times and beliefs. In the name of faith, some believers claim to develop a blessed and loving family living, but indirectly treat their family as God. Many singles serve the Lord faithfully until they got married and began to focus on enjoying the romance with their spouse. They gradually treat their children as their idols and continually focus on finding the most ideal solutions to bring them up. The result of them being focused on all these is the loss of heart to fulfil the Great Commission. Many believers in church also focus on promotion and developing themselves in their careers. Although they may offer to the church and be involved in serving occasionally, they do not struggle in their ideology when they live in this world. To them, it is very easy to strike a balance between the ideologies of this world and the ideologies of faith. The saddest part is that they do not feel uneasy about this. Actually, this is the belief that urbanized culture has brought about. Such form of belief conforms to human nature. It accommodates to man’s ideals and convenience and allows urban believers to find resonance in such a belief, such that the faith of carrying the cross daily becomes just a concept. In such a culture where beliefs in the city are changing, believers do not have the concept of suffering for the gospel. Practically, they also do not think that sufferings and trials are a type of reality in faith and even more, do not think that it is a way for God to sanctify believers. Adding on to this are “faith teachings” like that of prosperity gospel, hyper-grace, healing and deliverance, new apostolic movement, etc, that are packaged and presented so wonderfully. Faith has gradually become a retail commodity, dependent on the choice of individuals and to be adopted where appropriate. However, there are God’s chosen people in every of such era and city. They understand that those who stand firm on living a life of godliness in Christ Jesus will be persecuted (have sufferings) <2 Ti 3:12>. They may not like sufferings but clearly understand that true spiritual battle will have internal and external troubles. In the midst of this, they groan inwardly, but guard themselves from having secular beliefs. Neither do they desire the pleasures of this world. Their ideologies are truly different from the ordinary people. Their battles and objectives are different from that of this world. People of this world fight to prevent loss but they fight for the glory of God (guarding the heart given by the gospel). But realistically speaking, if we are living in cities today, how do we live in such a battle practically? Some people say, “How can there be sufferings in city living? The living conditions are so much better than before. People are also very self-satisfied.” Actually, this is just a surface phenomenon. Those who say this do not realise that their thoughts are already being taken captive. They also do not realise how vulnerable they have already become. The apostles went through sufferings, but they were not taken captive. The apostles also had weaknesses but they were not fragile. In living a life of godliness, we have sufferings and also weaknesses but there is freedom in our spirits and we are not ashamed. Today, believers who live in the city have to carefully examine their state of life and not consider resourcefulness as wisdom or self-confidence as assurance. If we do not have sufferings in city living, we are already in bondage.
