Christmas is a festival celebrated by everyone. However, many people do not know the true meaning of this day. Even if believers know the meaning of it, the meaning is quickly overshadowed and replaced by the joy, celebration and gifts exchange on this date. Actually, the birth of the Son of God brings about the greatest meaning in the whole of human history, for the whole mankind and for you and I today. However, our hearts easily forget this meaning or are even blinded of it, as we celebrate Christmas in laughter. This is how man, whilst in a joyous mood, forgets about his dry spiritual state. In times of smooth-sailing life and good health, we forget about the sinful nature which easily dominates us. If not for the grace of God, we will easily lose what we have. Hence, on the day of the Lord’s birth, this good news of great joy (the news that Jesus is born to save His people) was first given to the shepherds who were keeping watch over their flocks at night in the cold wilderness. King Herod who was in his palace, concerned about his power and authority, and the self-righteous scribes and Pharisees, did not hear the message. Then, does it mean that those with status and good reputation in this world will not be able to hear this message of the Lord’s birth? No, the Magi from the east heard it. They saw His star, and with much effort, travelled from afar on their camels and came from far to seek the place of the birth of the Savior, and presented the best gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn King. So how do people with power and authority, with good conditions and repute be blessed before God? It is when they see the value of gospel and do not love all that they have but they use all they have to live for the Lord (daily deny the self, carry their own cross to follow the Lord). Many times, in the comfort of city living, we easily fall into a spiritual trap where we have so much that we cannot give up. Because of our busy work, we are not able to lead a church-centered life. Because we are worried about our children’s studies, we do not let them spend too much time to serve the Lord. Because we are anxious of our tomorrow and our future, we are not able to walk the path of faith. We forget that, being born in a state of sin, we actually have absolutely nothing. Whatever we have now does not belong to us. Our wealth, health, beauty and relationships will disappear very quickly the moment we leave this world. However, there is only One who has everything. For in Him, all things were created, all things have been created through Him and for Him. Actually, all glory, honor, praise, beauty, wisdom and abundance belong to Him, but He chose to be born in the humble manger to be with sinful people and lead the simplest life. Eventually, He gave up His life to save the world. If we look into our inner heart and deeply ponder over the contrast between Him and us, we can see our own pride and greed, and we will understand that the abundance and joy of this life is not from living for ourselves but living for Him. Actually, regardless of the many Christmases that we have gone through, if we seek the meaning of Christmas in spirit and in truth, the Holy Spirit will speak to us in our current practical situations. We will experience the tolerance of God in our lives (He tolerated our ignorance) and we will also hear His calling (calling us to follow Him).
