There are two things in church that greatly display God’s glory. One is the love among saints, another is the serving by saints. Loving one another brings out the heart of God. Serving brings out the work of the Lord. The integration of these two aspects should be the direction which the church heads towards. There are many people with various gifts and talents in the church. But if serving is not done with earnest love, then the many kinds of outstanding conditions will become the envy of others and comparison with each other, leading to divisions. In addition, there are also distressed people who are weak and needy in the church. If the church lacks serving with earnest love, there will be some people in the church whose needs are not satisfied, or those who are weak will not be strengthened. We can see such phenomenon in the early church. When the number of disciples increased and the widows were overlooked in the daily distribution of food, because seven deacons were raised in the church to serve, it brought about the harmony of the Lord’s church, and the Lord’s word also spread <Acts 6:3, 7>. In fact, we have to always remember one thing, that is, a ministry is only a tool, but serving with earnest love is the true spirit given to the church by the Lord. For example, sometimes even if the church does not have a fixed visitation group, but a few brethren are convicted to come together to visit another brethren who is sick, this is a type of love in serving. Or, as Sunday school teachers get to know the children better and are willing to reach out more to children who are in need or have family problems, it is also a kind of serving. Indeed, sometimes, serving in the church requires some planning, but sometimes there is also no real planning. Sometimes it is organized but at times it is unorganized. It is not constrained by fixed ministries. It is like a pastor or a group leader, who does not only prepare message when he has to share a message. Instead, throughout his life, he has already received the message and inspiration to shepherd the brethren. This is moving towards love in serving and similarly, anointing is received during serving. Such serving will develop boundlessly, because it springs from love, instead of from serving to complete a task. That is serving with spiritual maturity, it is putting behind the childish mindset and heart, but having the steadiness and objective serving of an adult. That is serving which places the benefits of all people above own benefits, thus it will benefit everyone. As the church continues to grow in numbers, it is harder for supply to meet demand, then some churches will start to place emphasis on spiritual gifts, urging believers to pursue such gifts, so that they can more effectively serve all people. Sometimes, we always hear the church shepherds said, “We need those with the gift of faith to pray for the church” or “we need those with the gift of healing to step forward to pray for the sick”. These gifts seem to be mentioned in the Bible, but in the midst of such pursuit for spiritual gifts, believers very easily forget about the serving in earnest love. Sometimes, in pursuing these spiritual gifts, the serving among saints starts to enter into comparison, one ministry replacing another, one person who serves is more valued than another person. Because of this pursuit for spiritual gifts, the church also loses the spirit of love in service; instead, it falls into comparison, jealousy, inferiority complex, pride, hurts, etc. Thus, the Bible instructs us to “pursue love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts”. What kind of serving is this? As people who serve, how can we receive the Lord’s heart as we pursue love and also earnestly desire spiritual gifts?
