为何世界这么大，人种这么多？主说：“以色列的城邑你们还没有走遍，人子就到了”《太10:23》。因为主的旨意绝不是让一代人坐享其成或是以自己的利益而活，乃是他的子民继续将福音传给下一代，使更蒙恩的人起来完成主所赐予的福音使命。所以，一代人不管多么的蒙恩，他若对下一代人没有负担，那在属灵眼光上很大的盲点。有些教会总是带有那种老年人，中年人与年轻人的隔膜。老一辈的总是在某个角度轻看年轻人，觉得他们不成熟。年轻一代又总是觉得长者倚老卖老，或是处事待人顾虑太多。这类都是年长一辈和年轻一辈有史以来的分歧。老一辈的怕自己被淘汰，年轻一代人又不喜欢被小看，这样的分歧导致一个教会和它将福音传扬的潜无法被发挥出来。其实，年轻一辈需要长者的祝福和指引才能跑得更快，年长者需要年轻人的开通与灵活才能跟得上时代。这个是一个最普遍的道理，但却是在实际情况中非常难施行的。但虽是如此，人与人之间（特别是想法比较不一样的），需要有一些必要的碰撞，才能产生出新的火花。虽然这有一定的难处但却是必要的。特别现在网络时代所带给人的一种多元性，人借着不同的情报资讯产生出不同的想法，而一旦想法不一样就说有代沟。那么有些年轻人与那些与他三到五岁之差的就开始觉得有代沟，之后就向他人封闭自己或是以奇特的眼光看待他们，特别是他们的喜好、品味、穿着、沟通法等。其实，这显著是一种危机，也显示了人的“自我心态”已经到了极点。所以，我们要为下一代祷告，特别是当我们看见下一代人慢慢成为什么样子，或是这世界要将他们塑造为什么样子，我们上一辈的人不是轻看或议论他们，乃是要为他们祷告。因为年轻一代有他们的难处，且有要生存的挑战。特别当人都是生在罪中，不认识自己在基督里的身份，他们唯有在这世界找寻自我身份与价值。在保罗临终前写的最后一本书（提摩太后书），他基本上嘱咐提摩太的几样关键事项是：① 不要胆怯，圣灵与恩典能使你刚强《1:6-7；2:1》；② 你要将主的教训教导那些能忠心教导别人的人《2:2》；③ 末世必有危险的日子，要将主的道存在心里《3:1,14》；④ 无论人心变得怎样，忍受苦难，做传道的功夫《4:2-5》。但是若我们看下个时代的人，我们会看见有很多不与保罗教导的倾向在人的生命里出现。大体上来说：① 因为人知道的越来越多，人多相信自己的聪明与意志；② 现代人多提倡活在当下，教会领袖且多在乎现在实际的果效（例如：人数，规模），不是将主的道传承给下个时代，培训更蒙恩的工人；③ 现代信徒慢慢看不见危险的日子，人性也陷入更自我与不爱神的光景；④ 现代许多教导者都是随风飘动，按着人的喜悦来讲道，不是咬紧牙根，忠于传讲基督并祂钉十字架的道。确实，这些的症状就是我们为何要为下一代祷告的理由了。

Why is it that the world is so big and human race is so diverse? The Lord said, “you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes” <Mt 10:23>. Because the Lord’s will is certainly not for a generation of people to sit and enjoy the fruits of others’ labor or to live for their own interests, but that His people will continue to pass on the gospel to the next generation, so that more blessed people can be raised up to finish the gospel mission given by the Lord. Thus, no matter how blessed a generation of people is, if they have no burden for the next generation, that is a very big blind spot in their spiritual perspective. Some churches always have gaps between the elderly, middle-aged and the young people. The older generation always looks at the young people from a certain angle, and think that they are immature. The younger generation always feel that the elderly like to pride themselves on their seniority, or have too many worries in dealing with people and matters. This is the division between the older and younger generations since history. The older generation is afraid that they will become obsolete, the younger generation does not like to be looked down upon, such differences prevent the church from realising its potential to evangelise. Actually, the younger generation needs the blessings and guidance of the seniors so that they can run faster; the seniors need the open-mindedness and flexibility so that they can catch up with times. This is a most common principle, but in reality, it is very hard to practice. Nonetheless, between person and person (especially those with slightly different thinking), there needs to be some necessary collision for new sparks to fly. Although there is a certain difficulty in this, it is necessary. Particularly, the current Internet age brings people a kind of pluralism, people develop different thinking through different information, and once there are differences in the thinking, there will be generation gap. Some young people start to feel the generation gap between themselves and those who are 3-5 years older than them, then they shut themselves to others or view others with a peculiar perspective, especially their hobbies, taste, fashion, ways of communication, etc. Actually, this is obviously a crisis, and shows that humans’ “self-centered attitude” is at its peak. Thus, we must pray for the next generation, especially when we see the next generation gradually becoming a certain way or this world is shaping them in a certain way, we older generation is not to look down or comment about them, but we should pray for them. Because the young generation has their own difficulties and survival challenges. Especially when humans are all born in sin, they do not know their identity in Christ, they can only seek their self-identity and self-worth from this world. In the final book written before Paul’s death (Book of 2 Timothy), he basically instructed Timothy a few key things: (1) do not be timid, Holy Spirit and grace can strengthen you <1:6-7; 2:1>; (2) you must entrust the Lord’s teachings to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others <2:2>; (3)  there will be terrible times in the last days, keep the Lord’s word in your heart <3:1,14>; (4) no matter how human hearts change, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist <4:2-5>. But when we look at people of the next generation, we will see many people whose lives are not inclined to Paul’s teachings. Generally speaking: (1) Because people know more, they believe their own will and wisdom even more; (2) modern people advocate living for the moment, church leaders care more about practical results now (example: numbers, scale), instead of passing the Lord’s word to the next generation, training more blessed workers; (3) modern believers slowly cannot see terrible times, human nature also falls in the state of increased selfishness and not loving God; (4) many modern teachers drift with the wind, preaching based on human preferences, instead of biting the bullet and staying true to preaching Christ and Him crucified. Indeed, these symptoms are the reasons why we need to pray for the next generation.
