There are 3 reasons why believers face sufferings. The first kind of people suffer because of their own hardened state, their disbelief toward God’s word, and their love for flesh and world. Such suffering is like what Lot went through, this is caused by captivity by the prince of the world. The second type of people suffer because they carry the spirit of suffering, bearing the heart to be bold and zealous for God, but not knowing the perfect will of God, thus they suffer muddle-headedly. Such people usually suffer due to their ignorance (lack of wisdom or do not understand God’s perfect will). On the contrary, the third kind of people suffer because of Holy Spirit’s guidance, suffering that comes from believing in the fully-equipped gospel and solely wanting to follow God. Therefore, the prince of the world (spirit which opposes the gospel) rises to attack them. Satan uses the motives, hatred, repulsion, misunderstanding, slowness within men, etc to oppose them, so as to oppose the gospel which they believe in and which they preach. Paul was such a person and he also suffered because of this reason.  However, this suffering not only could not prevent Paul from spreading the gospel, but it also all the more strengthened his heart such that he could not resist the determination of Holy Spirit, thus making him more bold to spread the gospel.  Actually, when a person truly understands (truly believes) the fully-equipped gospel, and knows the benefits of gospel (can save, free, heal and send people), his heart will produce a vision and determination stronger than all sufferings and hindrances, such that he cannot decline from following God and cannot stop himself from sharing these benefits of the gospel with people besides him. Paul now faced the church of Corinth which was deluded by false prophets, he saw that the church’s believers started to be undiscerning toward the fully-equipped gospel which he taught them before and the false teachings (seemingly right but wrong teachings). To protect the church he loved, he had no choice but to reveal the intense suffering he went through for the sake of gospel, so that the Corinthian believers could understand that these sufferings were bore because he preached the fully-equipped gospel. At the same time, it was to help them know that because he suffered for the gospel, Holy Spirit gave him immeasurable power to be more than conquerors in sufferings.
