人的生命里有一个很微妙的矛盾，就是很想改变，却又觉得要改变非常难。每个人的内心里都有一种“向高处行”的渴望。我们希望更开心、更坚强、更漂亮、更健康、更充实、更爱主爱人、等。在金融界里头，我们也常常会听到不作出调整与改变的企业很快会被淘汰。在社会层面，我们也常听到国家领袖劝诫人民要改变来适应新全球化的大环境。在信仰层面，我们也会一直听到那劝勉信徒要改变的信息，或是挑战教会在面对新的世代时作出需要的改变。确实，我们在各领域中都面对了各种需要改变的必须因素，但我们也知道我们最大的阻拦就是我们不愿意改或者无法改。「改变」是一个非常诱人的字眼，但也同时是一个非常辛苦的字眼。我们有一大堆‘要改变’的向往，但也有一大堆‘不能改变’的理由。其实，这就显出了人的自主里头的一种无能无奈。其实，当我们谈到要「改变」的课题时，我们一定要问一个非常关键的问题，就是当我们向往改变，是否是从以「自我为中心」出发，迁移到以「神为中心」，还是从自我为中心进到更加的自我？当我们追寻改变时，有否将神放在我们的意图中呢？我们是否有更谨慎的寻求主的旨意，也在祂的同在中寻得帮助来改变？往往，人总是在现状中不能达成自己的理想或是想逃避自己不喜欢的感受，便立时想要改变。当然，改不改变是见仁见智的，而我们也要承认有许多的改变是带来更多的害处，叫人失去原有的必要根基（例如：信仰的根基，关系的根基，为人处事的根基）。但在另一方面，我们也要问说当我们不愿意改变，那是来自我们的自我（我的无能、固执、害怕等），还是那真是神不许可的改变？很多时候，我们也因为没有做出必要的改变，我们的关系、环境，甚至是自身的一些老体质总是留在僵局。倘若我们清楚必须改变的（无论是自己或环境），让我们不要体贴自己，乃要更加实际的寻求如何改变，因为在人是不能，在神却凡事都能《太19:26》。有时神确实用祂的能力来帮助我们改变，有时祂也要我们在改变当中经历祂的能力。所以，我们并不是等能力临到才做出必要的改变，我们其实已经活在祂的能力中了，而当我们一心遵行祂的旨意时，神的能力是同时能够经历到的。《牧师见证：在我的信仰经历中得着的一个最宝贵的证据就是当我肯定了是神要我改变之处，哪怕是面对心里面的障碍，或是人或环境方面给我的难处，我总是靠着加给我力量的主能够走出改变的路。这并非说我能改变所有的人和环境，但那在我里面的主能使我不放弃而继续向那不改变的心、人、环境做出挑战。我心中有个定意，就是不愿意在见到主的时候，看回去一生有许多因我的软弱或胆怯而逃避改变的做法》。再者，「改变」有时也并非是主动的，乃是被动的。当我们的大环境临到我们时，例如：工作越多挑战、孩子越难教导、人的关系越难建立、福音越难传、事工的需求越多、等，让我们不要害怕作出改变来面对那迎面而来的挑战。但试问我们又怎么从神支取那改变的能力呢？

There is an interesting paradox in life. People want to change but they feel that it is very difficult. Everyone has a desire to “go to a higher level” in their hearts. We hope to be happier, stronger, prettier, healthier, lead more fulfilling lives, love the Lord and others more, etc. In the financial world, we often hear that enterprises that do not evolve and adapt to change will become obsolete quickly. At the societal level, we often hear political leaders encouraging their citizens to change in order to adapt the new globalized world. At the faith level, we also hear messages that encourage believers to change, or challenge the church to adapt to the new era. Indeed, in all areas, we will encounter much impetus to change. However, we also know that our biggest obstacle is that we are unwilling or unable to change. “Change” is an alluring word, but at the same time it connotes hardship. We have a lot of areas where we desire to change; we also have many reasons why we cannot change. Actually, this reveals a form of helplessness and powerlessness in man’s sovereignty. Actually, when we talk about the topic of “change”, we must ask a critical question – when we desire change, are we moving from “self-centredness” to “God-centredness” or we are moving deeper into self-centeredness? When we are pursuing change, do we put God in our desire? Are we carefully seeking the will of the Lord, and in seek help in His presence? Often man wants immediate change because they cannot fulfill their ideals in the current state or they want to escape the unpleasant feelings. Of course, to change or not to change is subjective, and we must admit that some changes can bring more harm, causing people to lose the essential foundation (eg. foundation of faith, relationship and works). On the other hand, when we say we do not want to change, does it come from our own ego (powerlessness, stubbornness, fear, etc), or does it come from God not permitting the change? Very often, when we do not make the necessary change, our relationships, environment, and even old problems of the self will remain in a stalemate. If we clearly know what needs to change (self or environment), let us not indulge ourselves, but practically seek the way to change, because with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible <Mt 19:26>. Sometimes God uses His power to help us to change, but sometimes, He wants us to experience His power in our change. Therefore, we do not wait for power to come upon us before we make the change. Actually, we are already living in His power. When we wholeheartedly obey His will, God’s power can be experienced. <Pastor’s testimony: One valuable evidence in my faith journey is that when I have confirmed the area God wants me to change, whether it is psychological barrier, or the difficulties imposed by others or the environment, I am always able to rely on the strength of the Lord to chart out the course of change. This does not mean I can change all man or situations, but the Lord in me compels me not give up and continue to challenge the heart, man or environment that does not change. I have a resolution, that when I see the Lord one day, I will not look back at my life and see that I have avoided change because of my own weaknesses or fear>. Also, “change” sometimes is not active, but passive. When our situation changes, for example, more challenges at work, increasing difficulty to teach children, harder to build relationships, harder to evangelise, increasing load of ministry, etc, let us not be afraid to change to deal with the oncoming changes. Instead, we ask ourselves how we can receive from God the power to make the change?
