We are born to place emphasis on experience, because experience brings us to our senses, affirms our minds, gives us strength to advance and enables us to make appropriate decisions and insights. Actually, we are all indirectly influenced by our experiences. This is like after seeing a doctor, you are healed from an illness that u have been suffering for a long time. After that, if you are sick again, you will naturally find the same doctor. Or when we have a negative experience, that experience may become a hindrance to us later on. Indeed, experience brings us a lot of encounters and feelings, so people are attracted to the church because of experience, and are also convinced of the need to believe in God. Today, the church is full of personal testimonies, like what dreams people have or what they heard and then saw the realization. Or there was a tumor in the body, and an operation was planned to remove it, but after prayer, the tumor was no longer found. Indeed, it is real that people do have such an experience, or a sick person may resonate immediately with such an experience. Therefore, experience has its natural attractive power. It can attract a person to believe in one thing, or to trust what another person says. So, when I have the same experience as you, you can immediately feel that I can put myself in the same position as you. Hence, those with similar experience will naturally attract one another. They generally say the same thing, have the same resonance, and have the same opinion on things. Indeed, as long as we are living, we cannot be out of touch with experience, but we also need to recognize the ultimate truth, that is, “Our experience is not the gospel." Even if our experience is real, it is limited, it will also change or fade. For example, when parents give birth and bring their children into this world, their experience was very vivid. But as the child grows up, it becomes just a memory, and there may be other experiences that are more real now. So, even if we need experience, we cannot use our positive experiences as a channel to raise our level of faith. The church cannot feed the spiritual lives of believers with a single person’s testimony. Because our personal testimony is not the gospel, neither is it the truth. That is just a channel that leads us to the gospel truth. Indeed, God knows that fallen men have no way of relying on our own experiences to know God, so Lord Jesus was incarnated, in order for us to experience Him. But who is He? Is He a prophet? A divine physician? A noble man? We need to truly know Him, then our lives can truly change. Therefore, experience itself cannot change us, only the great power of the gospel can change our lives, so that we can truly believe, and believe again and again. Sometimes we go to a church, it feels very good. Perhaps it seems as if your child can fit in very well, or your spouse seems to have changed dramatically, but are all these a result of their growing understanding of the gospel of God? Is their relationship with God (seeing God’s presence, help and guidance) formed from their understanding of the gospel, or is it due to other relative experiences? Actually, only when their positive and ideal experiences are taken away will they know in their heart if they have truly understood the gospel. When a person truly understands the gospel, his experience goes from the flesh and emotional level to a spiritual level. For example, he begins to experience the glory of the kingdom of God, and the relationship between the kingdom of God and him; he begins to feel the real crisis of the world (not just the crisis of terrorist attacks and wars, but the enemy who is not of flesh and blood); he begins to experience God's support in adversity, and still be able to rejoice; he begins to experience joy through praises from God in doing good, which is not the happiness derived from doing good deeds. These various counter-intuitive experiences are all in line with the gospel he knows. Today, when we talk about "experience," we must be aware that the church has two crises. First, the church is increasingly lacking of such spiritual experiences. Most of the experiences shared and testimonies of believers are in line with the needs of human nature. Most of the testimonies are to satisfy our flesh and to motivate us. Think about it, is it true that most of Paul’s testimonies were like this? Weren’t Paul’s testimonies about how in suffering, he experienced glory upon glory and strength upon strength? <Phil 1:12; 2:27; 4:10-13> <2 Co 12:8-10>. In addition, because such active and positive testimonies are very popular and they make people amazed, so nowadays there are many teachings which start to over-emphasize human experience and turn them into a theological or spiritual principle, proclaiming that we can be healed of our illnesses if we believe. The images we see in our minds will be fulfilled, and when we speak in tongues, the devil will flee, etc. After many believers have experienced this, they started to explain the Bible lopsidedly by extracting some verses to suit their own experiences. If not, they invent false teachings that are seemingly true to verify their experiences and feelings. This may be one of the most serious problems in the church today, which cause people who are ignorant of the truth to receive various experiences, but unconsciously result in them having a weaker and weaker foundation in the Word of God. Over time, we will see that the church has a trend to use “experience to replace the Word of God”. Even if the teachings are according to God’s Word, they are taught in line with human experience, and not to clearly explain God’s “revelatory truth”. This is what we need to pray for ourselves and for the church today.
