It is in our innate nature to like to boast. Generally, people always boast of their intelligence, wit, talent, ability, etc. The entire human race is also boasting of human civilization and advancement. Practically speaking, we humans are all boasting about ourselves, such as what we know, or what we can do. Then, when we believe in the Lord, the first thing we discover is that "there is a Creator Lord", and He is the source of all creation. It turns out that all power and wisdom come from Him. Since then, we will turn from boasting of ourselves to boasting of the Lord. This is a great spiritual lesson! Some people seem to be boasting in the Lord by saying, "God gave me this, and gave me that", such as good grades, good career, etc., but at the same time, they seem to be boasting of themselves. Because the moment he does not have these so-called "this or that", he immediately falls into a trough and his heart cannot be thankful. Therefore, the one who truly knows how to boast in the Lord is like Job who having lost everything said, "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised!" <Job 1:21> There are also some believers who can only boast in the Lord in positive things. For example, after achieving good results, achieving good performance in their career, or raising a child with good academic performance, and by sharing these means they are boasting in the Lord. If this is so, how do we boast in the Lord when we encounter something that is not ideal or optimistic? If we only have such a concept of "boasting in the Lord", we can easily fall into a situation where we can only glorify God after seeking an optimistic or positive outcome. In this way, God is not the object of our ability to boast in all things, but instead we are only able to boast in the Lord in certain circumstances. In addition, some believers have their own methods and life strategies, such as how to manage interpersonal relationships, how to plan their life, how to manage money, etc. Such people often say, "May glory be to the Lord, to the Lord who has made everything possible and well." Indeed, he can have such a positive attitude and such thorough consideration of life, it is indeed God's grace. But once he encounters difficulties or bottlenecks in his life, does he know how to rely on the Lord to get out of that predicament? If he lacks experience in this area, his heart cannot rely on the Lord at all. Only in the context of his "ability" can he boast in the Lord; in his “disability”, he cannot boast in the Lord. Therefore, some people often ask this question in their hearts, "I give my best whether it is in my studies or my work. Hence, I am able to achieve good results no matter what I do. How do I then know if the good outcome is a blessing of the Lord or from my own effort?” Or some people may ask, “So is it my gift, or my personality that brought about my popularity, or is this all brought by God's blessing and grace?" Actually, if a person has diligent characteristics, superior talents, or excellent character, it is by the grace of God. But the problem is, when he has no way of realizing that all of these come from the grace of God, his heart cannot truly boast in the Lord. He would also not have a heart that relies on the Lord in all things. Therefore, God knows that human pride is the greatest obstacle to God's salvation coming to people. Sometimes the pride of man is not just a proud attitude as seen from the surface, but it is the pride of the soul. The pride of the soul causes people to regard God’s salvation as foolish because they have three types of unbelief. First, they do not believe in the redemption brought by the Son of God. They believe in merit and that they can save themselves with their good intentions and deeds. Second, proud people despise faith but value the flesh. They do not believe that they can experience the power and wisdom of God by faith alone. They only believe in what they see. So when it comes to power, there must be miracles. When it comes to wisdom, they only believe in the knowledge of this world. Third, proud people do not believe that those who seem foolish, weak and inferior can become intelligent, strong and honorable with the help of God. However, <James 4:6> tells us that, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” As the world continues to boast of what it can and what it knows, God wants to find and bless the humble, the one who can truly boast in the Lord in his heart.
